(no subject)

1. I was watching a preview for some stupid movie on Skiffy, and I swear it had Paul Campbell in it. Like, I pointed and went, "omgBilly!" Sadly, from what I can tell he isn't.

2. Oh, Who fandom. Shut up. I'm going to be cranky that Liz Shaw isn't around anymore at this rate.

3. Rusty. No, seriously. Pay attention to the fact that the original series never had your pointless and over the top angst.

4. Sigh. I miss the political mockery of the 70's. And The Sunmakers.

5. [livejournal.com profile] aj, my flist is still rabbiting on about Rose and how awesome she is and etc. Feel free to troll.

6. I shall now go pile things on top of other things, so the apartment is vaguely presentable when we get our new couch.

What? They don't like Martha? Martha rocks!

The ending of Smith and Jones made me giggle like mad. She was sexually harassing the Doctor! How can you not love that?

Actually. It's spoilery. Mostly, they're decrying the fact that Companions leave, not having gotten the memo that it's ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY.

Rusty really hasn't gotten it, either.

She was, which. Wow. I have an instinctive reaction of "BAD" to that, which was why I just thought of it as teasing. Not that, y'know, it wasn't payback for his Genetic Transfer earlier...

I just went and read some of it (this is the only show I really don't mind being spoiled for, for some odd reason), and while I'm still only minimally informed, it seems to me like another example of people being freaked out by change and unable to roll with it. I could be wrong.

Aha. Ahahahaa. AHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Oh my God.

That's hilarious. Fans are so dumb.

*nods* I was kind of blaming it on most sf shows that have happened in between old Whoh and new Who (and I hate splitting them like that, I really do) having more or less the same cast for four to seven years and so that's what everyone expects now.

But then I thought nah, they're just numptys. :)

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss the political mockery of the 70s, too.

Also, I think maybe being cranky about Liz is the right response to people rabbiting on about Rose.

I thought over the top teen angst went out in the late '90s.

The thing is, I keep coming up against the fact that Ace was the classic teen!angster. And Nyssa, too. Because Nyssa lost her father... Adric sort of fit the mold, but we're all busy disliking his boyish charms anyway, so maybe he doesn't count.

Jo was quite young, and I think they were going for nineteen or so with her.

I think I keep hitting the wall where all of the above-named characters in some way grew up and changed into adults along the way.

First year Jo would NEVER have fallen for Professor Jones, nor been out-spoken enough to try to champion his causes. First-year Ace, though, had already been dropped from tiny Perivale to Iceworld, and gotten herself a job without turning into a whiny "come save me!" teen. But then, I doubt Ace was much into making other people save her.

Nyssa grew up, lost her ideals and got them back again. She will never have an easy life on Terminus, but at least she'll be doing something.

At least Rose's behavior is echoed in Susan, who didn't really do any growing and left to be with her man--the Doctor forced her out, actually. We've seen her, older, and know she's settled in. But she was still such a child, then.

And the thing is, no matter how demeaning I think it was, Rose's choice would have been to stay with the Doctor. And he took that choice away from her as easily as he took it away from Susan. And all because she was a woman, and didn't really know her own mind... Or whatever.

...I am going to go back to cleaning.

...Rose's choice would have been to stay with the Doctor. And he took that choice away from her as easily as he took it away from Susan.

Actually, he was letting her stay with him. Circumstances (and a quick bit of deus ex machina by her "dad") sent her to the alternate universe. The Doctor tried to keep her back. (FWIW)

I am so with you on this "issue", though. She's gone -- get over it! Martha is brilliant and wise and resourceful. She's not all that far removed from Liz, come to that -- except Liz wasn't carrying a torch for the Doctor.

I like the way you compare previous teen companions. It's an interesting juxtaposition I hadn't considered before.

[identity profile] ladyniko.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think Rose would have eventually grown and moved on for herself - hell, Sarah Jane told her "some things are worth having your heart broken over for."

I believe is how the quote went. (Too lazy to dump in S2 DVDs to look :p) Rose wasn't ready to move on yet, not having gotten the maturity level to do so. She still had some growing to do before she would have found the strength to leave on her own, I would hope. But, that's just my opinion.

As for Martha - she came in and had a bit of a, "Wow, he's hot and he's a good kisser!" reaction to him that kind of carried over the course of the season. But, her growth in the last half the season is phenomenal.

For those that haven't seen the season, all I can say is wait. Give Martha a chance and quit dissing her just because "OMG! She's not Rose!"

Rose is gone folks, and no, she's not going to come back soon. The rift is closed and the Doctor would be jeopardizing at least 2 worlds if he reopened it. He's not that stupid. :-p

Nyssa lost her stepmother, then her father, and then her entire planet.

No no no. The point is, A.j.'s flist is being all anti-Rose. I didn't word it very well, bu I was mostly suggesting she could cheer herself up by poking it.

I feel your scorn... and I accept it.

And you just have to remind me that I've completely not had a chance to watch Torchwood episode 1, either. AUGH. I'm so behind in everything. :(

*blinks* Wait, I was reading with my special "people can't really be that stupid" filter, and automatically asssumed that there was ranting that Martha was leaving. But ROSE? Hello, people, I realize SciFi just showed it, but c'mon it's no great secret that she was leaving. I knew about it when it happened, last year, and I'm hardly in fandom. Some fans really are morons.

[identity profile] rosewildeirish.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Erm. I could make the standard Rose joke here, but. Pretty sure I've done that to you before.

Additionally, while Rose had moments where I didn't despise her, and moments where I liked her, and one or two kick ass moments - overall, no.

I didn't like her. Ick.
