Ahahah. I love that debate. It starts out patiently enough and then then he/she claims that Jack Sparrow the biggest fruitiest most painfully obvious mary sue beyond all mary sues isn't one because he isn't a blatantly obvious caricature (which he was). And then she got flamed like woah and it was satisfying because when you're trying to establish your mary-sue identifying cred and make that sort of claim.... *no sympathy*

Well...if you really look at it, it kind of...falls apart.

And...doesn't make much sense.

But it wasn't that it was too much for me, it's that 1. a portion of it kept landing on the cutting room floor 2. some of it was...meh, not well thought out, 3. there was not a lot of internal consistency, movie-to-movie or within the movie, and 4. ...they kept making rules and then breaking them, and calling "PIRATE!" as an explanation. Honestly, why even bother having rules if you never follow them?

Thank you so much for this link, this was truly a thing of beauty;) especially now when I just read some Atlantis fans bitching about how Sam is a mary sue because she will be in charge...really, if people want to hate Elizabeth/Sam/insert random female character it's fine but go on saying the reason they do is because they are "Mary Sue" and they would like them if they were written better is just bullshit.

Are we maybe reaching the point where the blanket "Mary Sue" name to EVERY SINGLE FEMALE CHARACTER is getting called for the bull it is? So people might actually STFU about it maybe? Ok, this makes me glad that I don't really partipate in 'fandom' as such.

When did 'Mary Sue' change in meaning from 'character who is basically everything the author wants to be and gets to do everything the author wants to do, written into the story as personal gratification at the expense of plot' to '(implauisbly) strong female character who the story focuses on'?
