Fandom is still fucking stupid

1. If you don't like LJ's methods, then I have a simple solution for you: delete your journal and go away.

2. No, really. This isn't like someone living in the US disliking US policy and being unable to leave the country. You can just delete your journal, close up shop, and go away.

3. Why are you still posting about the injustice? I just gave you a solution.

4. FanLib must be happy that we're ignoring them now, to defend incest.

Would Starbuck or Carter delete her journal and go away?

Meh. I'm ignoring them because I've concluded they're silly and irrelevant.

The WfI wankapalooza, I'm staying out of because I mostly Do Not Care.

Neither of them would be writing or supporting incest in the first place.

Honestly, fandom's reponse has been far more wanky than WFL.

I'm honestly not sure WHY WFL are being called wankers, though. I do wish LJ had kept a closer look on things like incest. But that a group is targeting incest and making lj get rid of actual groups that glorify it and make it a wonderful thing?

Yeah. Not crying any tears over it.

I only glanced at WfI's front page, so I honestly couldn't say. But it would take some doing to be wankier than what's going on in fandom.

There are some legitimate concerns in there somewhere, sure, but it really pretty much boils down to "LJ did what their lawyers said would CYA." There's an entry on [livejournal.com profile] fandom_lawyers that explains this incredibly clearly and concisely. People will pay attention, or they won't.

I get that incest is a hotbutton for you, but that's not what it's about. The most comprehensive roundup of the issue I've seen is here. According to reports, journals deleted include those of people writing on being, or supporting, victims of sexual abuse. That is out of line, and not something your heroes or mine would turn their backs on. Well, maybe Avon.

[identity profile] crantz.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm cringing at the people who want it in the news. Fandom is just going to end up looking like NAMBLA with magic wands.

The sad thing is, I don't even know what this group is called.

*reads the posts on the comm* Which, basically, is why I think LJ did exactly as it should. And I honestly wish fandom would shut the fuck up about it, but I don't think they will, since now they can't have their incest porn (and they're all ignoring the fact that they can simply start a new community, not list those interests, and make all posts flocked. But, y'know, that would require THINKING on their parts)

Your approach and mine differ slightly. I look at this as a slippery slope that can extend to suspending journals based on interests that newly become questionable in Bushian America: and erotica is a big part of that. So I am moved because I see that LJ has proved that it will cave like a house of cards when it comes to user content.

And I, as a paying customer of Livejournal, am free to express my distress with the company's capricious change of its procedures with these pre-emptive suspensions. That is also a legitimate response.

Fanlib? Honestly, that doesn't bother me. I don't think it will get off the ground very well because it seems rather starved for content. Again, the market at work. People aren't choosing to use it and isn't that exactly what you're talking about in 1, 2 and 3?

[identity profile] crantz.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm busy going "OH GOD I SHIP SENIOR CITIZENS PLEASE DON'T LUMP ME IN WITH THEM" in my head.

They're called Warriors for Innocence. Which is pretty lame, and frankly they seem to be as well, in the "well-meaning but not thinking things through too well" category. Much like the fannish hue and cry, really. There's excessive deployment of the slippery-slope theory on both sides, and there's very little that will make me skeptical faster than that. Not that it's not sometimes valid, but it's waaaay overused.

Still and all, I Mostly Do Not Care pretty much sums it up. Including whether or not people continue to rage about it. *shrug*

dude. What idiot named their comm boysfuckingboys or put pedophilia in their interests and didn't expect something like this to happen eventually? They're just lucky nobody else has officially informed LJ before this.

The Lolita one discussion one that got whacked should tell people it has nothing to do with fandom, except for those unwise enough to put incest, or child porn as an interest.

*snicker* I really think that post on Fandom Lawyers sums it up, in the end. LJ didn't care, until they finally poked their lawyers, who said, "uh, we could be liable".

But Fandom is Speshul, donchaknow. We are all unique little snowflakes...
