Everything I know about Cally hate I learned from queenofthorns latest post (seeing as I haven't watched BSG in ages), so I don't really know why everyone hates her, but maybe the comments there will give you some idea?
I used to love her so much, but I kind of fell out of love with both her and the Chief after they got together right after he beat her up. The storyline just rubbed me the wrong way.
She's whiny and nasally and I don't particularly think the actress is talented. *scrunch* Just thinking of her talking grates me.
It's not a case of me hating on the character because of some other character. In fact, I don't care all that much for Boomer/Athena. As bad as the show is getting, I'm starting to not like any of them...
Is there much Cally hate? Well, apparently since you mentioned it. On Cally I've ranged from indifferent to ready to call her and the Chief my little moppets. However, in Dirty Hands I wanted to smack the crap out of her. Next week I may want to pinch her cheeks. I'm so fickle.
Yeah, but there are diehards out there who dont exactly live in reality. Cause you know, hot asian chicks *totally confused by this, shes pleasant, but I dont find her hot* are just beating down their doors to be saved by these guys. Same group of people who think Kara is too masculine as well. I think that tells us a lot about the Cally haters.
Maybe it's something like "Everybody Hates Chris" only with Cally instead?
I'm thinking that maybe it's because she's a bit whiney, but she's always been whiney and she's still pretty tough, so I'm not sure where the hates from.
Then again, there wasn't really a character I hated. One I wanted to hit repeatedly, but didn't hate.
I didn't realize other people hated her, because I'm not in fandom. I haven't been able to stand her since day 1, and I'm not even sure why. Something about her being... "a tough little spitfire" but actually whiny? And killing Boomer because of her sekrit love for the Chief in season 1 stuck with me because I stopped watching soon after, and so didn't really realize that Boomer actually came back and got a better life after that. Wheee?
I don't know! I don't hate her for fandomy reasons. She's just the sort of person I want to punch, and I'm not sure why.
I have a theory! The Cylon killing virus *does* affect humans. Baltar brought it back with him when he was recaptured by the humans, and now everyone on Galactica has it and its making them act batshit.
Re read this, and I have to say I think its jealousy. I could be soo wrong, but let's see.
Cally loves the Chief, since the beginning, and from then she knew the Chielf and Boomer were an item. She didn't approve feeling in her opinion this relationship would damage the Chief more than Boomer. Later on boy is she right. Cally is at first a girl with balls and attitude but I think the reason some people didn't take to her is that she isn't a fantastic pilot, she is just ordinary, doing any ordinary job and takin no bullshit from anyone except the Chief. Anytime the Chief wants a favour from Cally she bends over backwards when he asks and even when he doesn't. ie Trekking with the Chief on Kobol to get the morpha for Socinus, Blackmailing Baltar (Megaballs in my opinion for that one),Shooting Boomer. This girl has an inner core strength that she has to use with what she has. She is a fighter, maybe not in viper pilot kinda way like BUCKY/KAT/RACETRACK, but with what is at hand. She is not beautiful, enough pretty, not everyone who is a hero is beautiful or handsome. Also her love has in no way been secret as nearly everyone onboard knows she loves the Chief - including him. My favourite episode featuring Cally is Bastille Day. When she fought the rapist -no mind that he may have been a freedom fighter, when he saw her, the rapist part came to the fore and the freedom fighter part took a fucking great big hike especially with the shooting in the stomach. Yes, she fought first with words then with her body and teetch, even when threatened with death she wouldn't bend or buck. No way is this woman deserving of this amount of hate.
Mind you I believe this too of Dee. The only female character I find in the series so far I can't stand is 3/D'anna Biers - Give me Chief obssessed Cally ofver 'Seeking Cylon' any day of the week.
PROPS TO CALLY - KICKASS WOMAN/WIFE AND MOTHER. (My little boost the + column for Cally Henderson Tyrol).
I recall that one, but principally because its firstrun was the occasion of the first airing of the commercial for the Who tv movie, and I was foresighted enough to tape it. I went through that ad a frame at a time at least twice.
HOW CAN ANYONE HATE CALLY? Like, did Ron and Co sit down and write a episode that I haven't seen yet where Callie's not being kick ass? If so, warn me, cause I'm not sure I wanna watch.
The problem I have with Cally is that she's dull as dishwater. She seems to spend so much of her time either staring blankly or whining, and I just find it annoying. Once upon a time, I started to like her. I liked her when they were on Kobol, because she faced her fears (she was obviously terrified) and just got on with what had to be done. I loved that. It showed backbone.
But then she got whiny, and even worse - featureless. She fades into the background except when it seems to be convenient to use her as a plot device. Like - suddenly she's grabbing hold to Baltar's 'the people are oppressed book' and pushing Chief on it? How does that make sense after what she experienced under Baltar & the Cylons? It really doesn't, and is just one more example of how Cally seems to be...empty. Featureless. She grates on my nerves.
To be fair, though, I've been bored by a lot of s3. Many characters seem to be just trotted out as a plot device for a plot that seems to be weak.
I used to like Cally a lot, but lately (read most of season 3) she seems whiny and uninteresting as a character, particularly the last few episodes in which the character seemed like nothing more than a cheap plot device.
I used to really like Cally. She was cute and feisty, she bit that guy who tried to rape her, she helped hide the Chief's relationship with Boomer even though she had a crush on him. But somewhere along the way I think she went from cute and feisty to whiny with a *huge* of self-entitlement complex.
I'll admit, murdering Boomer didn't exactly warm me to her. But I think it's normal to dislike someone who kills your favorite character. But frankly, for me it wasn't even so much killing Boomer, but the look of triumph on her face as she watched the Chief breaking down holding the woman he loved as she died in his arms.
Her relationship with the Chief after he beat the holy shit out of her just made me uncomfortable, no matter how out of his mind Tyrol was at the time of the assult.
For me the final nail in the coffin was when Tyrol asked her if anybody saved her on New Caprica and at first she said she didn't even remember and that she never really thought about it. I don't understand how someone couldn't think about that all the time. Someone mysteriously rescued her-and only her-when she was about to be killed by Cylons. How could she not think about that, much less not remember it at first? I like to think that if someone rescued me, allowing me to live and to get back to my husband and child, I wouldn't rest until I figured out what had happened so I could thank said savior.
It doesn't help that I think the actress who plays her is rather weak. She did the cute background stuff well, but I don't really think she has the chops for the more dramatic scenes.
(And on a side-note, I utterly adore Dee. She's one of my favorites.)
I don't HATE Cally, but I do understand the dislike. The actor who plays Cally seems like a very very sweet girl... but she's rather one note in her portrayal of Cally. Cally comes off as whiney instead of sympathetic. I think because fandom doesn't see a lot of potential growth for the character, there isn't much forgiveness for the whiney-ness whereas we've see the actor who plays Dee be very multifaceted.
You've articulated well why I also hate her. I don't actually care that she killed Boomer, as I found Boomer super annoying too.
Mainly now I hate her because she's whiney/naggy, selfish and seems pretty dimwitted. (She buys into Baltar's crap when he *sent her off to be executed*?) Plus I don't think Nicki Clyne is that talented.
The apparent age difference between Cally and Chief also bugs. He's in his mid-thirties and she's in her early twenties, which works for some couples, but in this case he just seems like her big brother. He's always the one having to be the adult.
I hated her less in S1 but now I dread whenever she comes on the screen. It doesn't help that they've given her pretty one note roles this season. I just wish she'd die or fade back into the background.
Of course, I also like Dee. Maybe people who hate Dee, like Cally and vice versa?
I don't get the Cally hate. I don't hate Cally. In fact, she is one of my favorite characters. She is, quite possibly, one of the most realistic characters on the show and is more complex than people give her credit for.
And I put A LOT of thoughts and points here (http://community.livejournal.com/aint_no_disco/4810.html#cutid1) if your interested in a nother few opinions.

And. dude. I could rant for hours about the characters being brought out as plot devices. Character-driven drama my ASS.
