lyssie: (Cally Sharon argue)
lyssie ([personal profile] lyssie) wrote2006-10-09 07:16 am

Oh, come ON.

Seriously, people. Fandom and double standards...

Cally-specific rant.

I am sick up to HERE of seeing all of you say, "Cally shouldn't have talked smack to Boomer, she was the only one who could save her." while at the same time saying, "It's so great that Kara hasn't given in to Leoben and that she keeps killing him."

Are there differences? Sure. Leoben is obsessed with Kara, Leoben wants her to change her mind. Boomer just wanted to see if she could still connect with someone she'd once considered a friend.

Boomer can't help Cally.

Leoben, conceivably, could be convinced to let Kara go. But I doubt it. Maybe, y'know, if Kara played nice and pretended they were one big happy family.

It's not like Cally knew they were going to summarily execute her, y'know. She's in detention, she's cold and scared and worried about her husband and baby, but people have survived detention.

It would also NOT be true to herself to fawn all over some cylon to get free--just like Tigh didn't, or Roslin didn't break to Gaius' demands, or Zarek, or anyone ELSE.

WHY SHOULD CALLY DO WHAT THEY DIDN'T?

Oh. Because you don't like her.

Gosh.

Your logic is SO strong.

Fandom is seriously fucked in the head sometimes.

Personally, Cally rocked my socks in this episode :-D So fandom can bite me!

[identity profile] timjr.livejournal.com 2006-10-09 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
...

Idiots.

Cally was sooooo awesome in the first two eps of Season 2. She was perfickly in character, and given that Cally was all flat out 'can you help me? No? Then frak off, cause I kinda totally hate you', yeah.

I loved it. Because it showed her edge again, after the webisodes had kinda thrown her solely into the domestic house wife role.

I totally predict that Cally will morph into this angry avenging, like, mother lion sort of figure. Because I swear, Nick Tyrol is dooooomed.

I'd guess it's Boomer fans who're saying this. "Boomer isn't evil, she's misunderstood!! Cally should stop being mean to her! And so should Lee and Cat and everyone! Meanies!" Well, she isn't evil, but she is hard to understand because she's complex which is why you like her, and you can't have it both ways.

*nods emphatic agreement* And seriously? When Sharon herself is, while certainly (and understandably) not happy about the reaction, neither surprised by it nor particularly blaming Cally for it? Why the heck should her fans?

That she both expects and accepts Cally's reaction, in my book, is one more damned impressive step in how far she's come from the lost, broken kid who made a pathetically botched suicide attempt not so very long ago. Because, dude, if she couldn't handle people being "mean" to her with not-so-unreasonable cause? There really would be no hope.

There are people who don't like Cally? How is this possible? She only wanted to pay for dental school!

Where is this discussion going on? *is confused*

I actually don't know if it is or isn't. I just know that I've seen several comments--in reviews and in replies to reviews--with people saying things along the lines of, "I hate Cally even more now, she should have been nice to Boomer to get her ass out of there!"

I'd say in about a quarter of the ep review posts I've read, there's either been something in the review, or people bitching out Cally in the comments.

*g* I knew you'd love it.

Mostly, I'm railinjg against the double standard of "Yay! Kara! Yay! Tigh! (although I don't know if Tigh registers) Yay! Mom! Boo! Cally!"

I actually don't mind if people don't like her (hell, I like Ellen Tigh, and most of fandom hates her). It's just the double standard that was annoying me.

Yes, but will fandom buy you breakfast the next morning?

That, too. A lot of it, I think, is Grace Park's stellar acting job (she really brought it, this episode).

I like Cally. But I was one of the people thinking she wasn't being overly clever. She doesn't know Boomer can't help her. I don't think she should be cringing or conciliatory, and I understand why she reacts the way she does but still...

Kara is Kara. The girl wouldn't bend if it would kill her but I don't necessarily consider it healthy. Cally always struck me as a bit more balanced. Also, with Leoben, there is clearly no reasoning (and for all we know she tried, it's been four months). Boomer? She has no power but that's different. And maybe by pushing you could guilt her into letting you go.

Basically, I like Cally. I still like her. A lot. Just not necessarily on board with her approach.

[identity profile] rhi-silverflame.livejournal.com 2006-10-10 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Which, IMO, is all well and good. It's the "god, I wish she'd hurry up and get shot" sentiment that bothers me.

[identity profile] isography.livejournal.com 2006-10-10 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Here from [livejournal.com profile] galacticanews and I could not agree more!!

Kara's characterization right now is nutso and all over the map, I don't even see how a comparison can be made!

[identity profile] dingoaction.livejournal.com 2006-10-11 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
wait, now that you mention it, how does Kara keep killing Leoben? just because she knows he'll wake up in a few hours a-ok? she seemed pretty distraught when he went flying out the airlock. was that just because she thought he'd really be dead? so now killing the body isn't the same as killing the soul (which is what she thought was happening before)? if that's the case, is she growing as she learns about the cylons?

i think the cally problem is that she was so much of a blank slate early on that people filled in what they wanted to--i know i did that--and now that she's developing as a character, she's not exactly like the picture i had in my head, which is a tad irksome. she's nursing a grudge, and in my head, she'd grown past that. But like [livejournal.com profile] grav_ity said, Cally's very human.

and we can't have that.

[identity profile] laddical.livejournal.com 2006-10-11 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
She had made a connection with him in "Flesh and Bone" and started to see him as more than a "frakking toaster", and thus was sorry to see him killed.

However, human or toaster, what he's doing now is beyond fucked up, and I don't have any problem with her as a character doing what she's doing. I feel badly for her that she's playing right into his hands by doing so. But I don't see it as a disconnect between how she reacted in "Flesh and Bone" and what she's doing now.

I was glad when Cally talked back to Boomer, because the rest of the time lately (in the s3 eps and webisodes) I've found Cally so dull. I remember when I thought she had fire, when I was thinking, "Go Cally!" so when she didn't back down/suck up to Boomer, I saw some of that old fire come back.

[identity profile] alesia027.livejournal.com 2006-10-14 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I have no sympathy for Boomer. If she and Caprica Six wanted to really promote a peace between the two races, Boomer would have put her neck on the line to get Cally out as a jester of peace to someone who (not only killed her - although I don't think the Cylons really consider that a big deal) but as someone who took her lover.

Although I might be biased because, I don't have a lot of patience for either Boomer or Sharon really so that might be why I wasn't impressed with Boomer. I am willing to give Sharon some rope (Adama has to trust her for some reason we don't know yet) but Boomer hasn't done anything to really make me care what trials she goes through. Putting her neck on the line for Cally could have done that.

Cally, as always, has a huge set of BRASS ones and did exactly what all of the rest of the fighters are doing - STOOD TALL and told the Cylons to frak themselves.

Fandom hates Cally because most of the silly boys think Boomer is hot and therefore always right. :)
