Ten years is a damn fine run for a cable series. That it's sci-fi is even more impressive.

Did the producers know in time to wrap things up in the final episodes?

I assume so. Apparently, they've been writing every season end as if it could be the last (although, also apparently, they were told they'd be getting another year. Which sounds awfully familiar. Oh, Bonnie, you know you really love giving them enough rope...)
