driving me insane

I think I will scream the next time I see any variation of the following (unless I am at work, in which case I will seethe silently and then probably whine at Jara via email like I did today): "I write the men on X show because the women are boring."

Because, seriously. The men are just as boring. You prefer cock to cunt. So stop fucking lying about your reasoning.

eta: Actually, that's a good point. Has anyone ever said "I write the women in X show/comic/movie because the men are boring."?

God, that justification gets old real fast. And frankly, if they feel the need to justify what they're doing, then maybe they ought to wonder who they're really trying to convince.

The new(ish) slash vs het debates that have cropped up again are making me want to dig my eyes out.

I wish I could say the hetshippers say it, but they really don't (even if only half of them actually like the woman in question, since at least 3/4s are just writing it to have sex with their dude). It's always a slashshipper who says it.

And it's never said the other way.

*stops* I promised myself I would not get rambling and pointless and rageful on this. I shall not. *zens out with the cat*

Testify, sister.

That gets into the slasher argument that I've heard so very often: "I slash male characters because there is a paucity of strong, interesting female characters in (insert fandom name here) fandom." Oh, really? Really? If you're talking Tolkien, that's a crock of absolute shite. If you're talking comics, that's also a crock of absolute shite. If you're talking almost any fandom that I'm in, that's a crock of absolute shite.

I of course know not ALL slashers feel this way, but I've heard it enough to label it a definite voice in a certain section of fandom.

As an occasional slasher, and as someone who used to slash a lot more, that gets on my metaphorical tits to the point of teeth gnashing. In fact, that line of reasoning is what drove me away from interacting with the majority of m/m slashers that I knew at the time, not to mention the outright heterophobia that I'd occasionally encounter.

I suspect, on some level, in some cases, there is actually female misogyny going on. I mean, I left a LOTR game I was in (along with a few other players that bailed at the same time) when we realized that the majority of players in the game whined constantly about how much they hated this or that female character in said fandom and how disgusting het was. This is anecdotal, but when you hear from like people about how they hate every female character in every fandom they are in, I start to seriously suspect an element of some kind of self-gender hatred going on.

The next person who tells me, regardless of what their writing or shipping proclivities are, that there are no strong female role models in comics is going to get a virtual shattered jaw over the internet.

Amen. I have to admit that I find m/m action boring because I don't prefer that. I think there's like one m/m ship that I follow in fandom. But anything with /f -- f/f or m/f? I'm so there!

Yeah, it's easy to keep going and suddenly have a whole *thing* going with fandom rage.

I've just written something out 4 times here and then deleted it because it was going to be a whole thing. Ehhh... you know what I would have said anyway. Preaching to the choir, I am.

*smooches you*

Exactly. I kind of want to yell at the mostly female majority that seems to tout that as 'justification'. Just. Whaaatever. If you wanna write slash, fine! Yay! But yes. Cop to your prefering the cock.

Oy.

I do. And I bet we could each go on for hours (and bore each other, in the end). Instead, I propose fic-writing. ;)

YES. If they would just admit they find women boring/prefer men, fine. But don't justify it with "the female characters are boring".

BOOBS.

THE MALE CHARACTERS ARE MORE BORINGS.

Although, I have to say that I think we're partially brainwashed to worship The Cock. And fear the Vulva. DO NOT FEAR THE VULVA WEE LITTLE SLASHER WOMEN WHAT THINK THE FEMALES ARE BORING! IT WILL NOT EAT YOU! IN FACT, IT WANTS YOU TO EAT IT! FOR SURE!

Er, I'm writing Rose/Sarah Jane because Ten has annoyed me recently?

I'm also writing Mickey/Jake in the same story because I like slashing sidekicks

At some point I'll figure out who to slash Kate with, and write some Lost fic because the three main men are a bit irritating from a writery point of view.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel as though I could write a long post about this entire subject, but I sense that would be pointless (and a waste of ficwriting time).

Instead, I will say, "mmm. Women." and run off back to work.

(and also, YAY for sidekicks getting written)

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The trouble is, it's a subject that still needs to be written about. Even if most of the comments will be very much on one side or the other with few converts.

Thing is, I don't have the vocabulary to really do it, though. I mean, I'm not particularly intellectual, and most of what I'd say is just from observation and such.

It also sounds rather a lot like whining.
