things that piss me off

I was ranting at woodface and realized I should simply say it here, instead of annoying her immensely.

1. When I write a piece for a ficathon, for a specific person's prompt, and they never bother to respond. This has happened to me TWICE. The Kara round at the Getyourtoaster ficathon (the person I pinch-hitted for, however, DID give me feedback), and the long ago Helo/Boomer one. I didn't mind not receiving it for the Secondary Ficathon, as I was so very late on it. Seriously, you requested something, a simple fucking 'thank you' would be nice.

2. Seeing really shitty and mediocre fic get reviews. Here's a clue, people: Encouraging bad fic writers just makes them worse. And if you're counting me in there, why the fuck are you reading my journal?

3. Rose. Actually, she's more of a hate thing (and I must not mention it much, or something. Or I only mention it over at nos's, maybe), But, yeah. Rose. She's annoying, not particularly interesting, and her Family Issues are so pointlessly boring I still haven't watched all of season one. And I only made it through Boomtown by fast-forwarding large portions. Oh, wait, that was the stupid fucking Slitheen shit subplot.

4. I'm being distracted by Kara and Anders. *wanders off*

eta: #1a. If you have written something for me, and I have NOT commented, POKE ME now. I don't always notice these things. I never said I wasn't hypocritical.

Re: #1, YES. If you request fic of ANY kind, the least you can do is read and respond when the person writes it for you. Also, it sort of pisses me off when I get stiffed in a ficathon and the person who was supposed to write my request just completely drops off the map until the ficathon is over, and then they appear again and just act as if nothing has happened. WTF?

I completely agree with #1. It's just so rude.

I had the opposite of that happen with me for the sga_rareathon. The person I wrote for was out of town during the post phase, and wouldn't be able to get to a computer for a while, so she had one of her friends comment on the story and let me know all of this. It was just so thoughtful. And then she left feedback as soon as she got back.

The problem with shitty and mediocre fanfiction is that often readers don't know any better. Often, perhaps most often, they're shitty and mediocre writers themselves, and the problem with that is that there's no way to improve but to keep writing; but meanwhile they like the other shitty and mediocre stuff because it looks like their own. We were all there once ourselves. All you can do is offer constructive criticism or hope that others do, and skip what you find unreadable.

3- Utter agreement. Not only does the girl have the danger-sense of a particularly stupid brick, she also has an annoying inability to close her mouth (Knightley's Syndrome, I believe?) and cannot act to save her life.

I concede that we all started out mediocre. But I, for one, never actually got constructive criticism. And it wasn't until I hit SG-1 fandom that I ever got more than a small amount of feedback.

And I'm sorry, but I just don't have time to go around offering constructive criticism to the thousands of incredibly bad authors who still receive 300+ comments of praise.
