More Doctor Who new series ramblings
Yet again, I have Canthlian to thank for my copy.
Rose.
Again, I love that we're dumped right into the story. no explanations, no Dramatic Opening Titles (which is one of the things I loathe about the new Battlestar Galactica. Every opening has the stupid 'We must lead you down the garden path' open). It just kicks you right into the story, into the action.
The Autons weren't scary the first two times around, either.
I LOVE CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON. His Doctor is fabulous. He just IS. He's there, he's quick, he's amusing (he couldn't save Wilson, but he figured he could pull Rose).
The plastic arm. I love that Rose is hanging onto it, and completely doesn't remember it's there. I've done that, personally. Picked something up and wandered around without noticing I'm still carrying it.
"Nice to meet you, Rose. Run for your life!"
*dies* I just LOVE the way that's delivered.
*squees*
There's a fabulous sense of Rose walking down the street, everyone's acting perfectly normally. But she's not normal anymore. She's suddenly seen that the world is fucking strange, and she's uncertain and weirded out.
And her mother. HAHAH!
BED HAIR! I have hair like that in the morning!
"You're not plastic, are you? No, bonehead. Bye now!"
*snickers* Have I mentioned that I love him? And Rose? Who is SO pissed that he's run her job off and made her life change in strange ways she can't even contemplate yet?
"That won't last, he's gay and she's an alien." Mwahahahahahah!
I love that he reads the book, that he ignores her completely, that he fiddles with his ears (EEE!!!!!! Post-Regeneration silliness! Omg!!!). And the trying out things. The cards! Definitely NOT a cardsharper. "Have you got a cat?" heheheheheh
"Honestly. Give a man a plastic hand." *dies again*
Poor coffee table. It gave its life so that we might have the amusement of it breaking. *sad* (although, not as good as Aeryn going through the coffee table in Terra Firma)
"Yes, I can. This is me, swannin' off."
Rose demands to know what's going on, saying she's entitled. And he says he doesn't have to tell her. I like that a lot. Because he shouldn't have to explain, damnit.
Can I note that Rose in jeans is nice? They're sensible, they're rugged, they're (dare I say it) not fashionable. Although her shirt probably is, and her shoes. And the getup she was in for the beginning was probably quite Hip. In ten years we'll be wincing at how much the go-go boots and miniskirt look dated.
Wait. Got Jo and Rose mixed up there for a second.
"Suddenly, the entire world revolves around you!" Yay! Mary Sue smackdown.
*giggles madly*
Wars going on beneath our feets. What an apt slam against the world and everyone in it. *pets the line*
And, fandom everywhere gets bitchslapped for not having a lot of women. Mwahahahah. The Clive bit I could've done without, but since we're supposed to be Rose, and thus, learning about the Doctor, I'll let it slide.
The bin bit is amusing. As is the running about and screaming, and generally panicking.
Rose's reaction to the TARDIS is priceless. Yes, dear, it's bigger on the inside than the out. She goes in, then runs right back out again. I'm not sure if that's what I would do, but....
Don't have a problem with his boredness about her boyfriend being dead.
And, on an SG-1 note. Look! The TARDIS is where Jack's boat is docked!
Also, dude, the social consciousness stuff is CLASSIC Who, and I love it to pieces, omfg.
The handholding is a little disturbing, though.
Rose is there to do what every companion has through the ages. Give the Doctor someone to pontificate to, and point out the obvious.

Love the bits with alien politics, and the Doctor's despair.
And the end! Hee! She doesn't just jump at the chance the first time (despite me yelling at her not to be an idiot). She has to be convinced.
