More rambling on BSG: Colonial Day
Which was missing its title, btw. I suspect someone hit play too fast, and didn't flip from the commercial reel quickly enough. Eh. Spoilers.
The bar fight. I'm still of two minds on this. First, I think the original confrontation in the courtyard was timed to keep suspicion away from the, like, ONE MAN carrying a briefcase. It was an altercation that drew attention to the big burly guy.
And I think Lee has a lot of pent-up anger. I think he's angry that these people can work against everything he holds sacred. Honor, duty, etc. And I think Zarek was hoping to play on that.
It's interesting to note that the bar brawl starts because of Zarek. I think his supporter took it as a good moment to make the Fleet look bad (c'mon, a Fleet officer beating up on an innocent civvie who just wanted to hear his leader speak? Oh, god, I'm sure they loved that and the spins were out before it had been five minutes over with).
The discovery of the shooter was accidental.
Valance, the shooter, knew he was dead. Seriously, there's this bit where Kara says something and he looks right at her, and you can see his eyes basically go blank. He knows he's dead, but he's not going to spill the beans on his conspirators.
I think Valance was supposed to kill Zarek as a last resort.
Ellen Tigh. I'm definitely of the opinion that she was involved, if not the killer herself then she distracted the marines, in the death of Valance.
I flipflop on her being human. I like the idea that she's a Cylon, it makes it easier. But it's also believable that she's simply a psycho-bitch who wants to social climb, and has always wanted to be more than 'the XO's Wife'.
The Towel scene. Can I be completely shallow and note that my attention was so focused on Starbuck dressing, and not the fact that Apollo was half-nekkid?
Because, for the second time through, I was.
The hygiene comment totally reminded me of my brother, too. Seriously, other people with brothers back me up here. Aren't they irritating, and prone to mocking your hygiene at times?
It also rang true as an officer to officer kind of thing.
Plus, boys will be boys, and mock each other incessantly, and all that.
And, yeah, the moment he saw The Dress, Lee was like, "...omg. Kara's a GIRL." And she SO humored him. (also, I love that Starbuck so can NOT dance. It was funny as fuck) I think I'm going to maintain (having noted that ALL of the women were in formal gowns of some sort) that the President requested that the women of the Fleet wear gowns rather than dress greys. And Adama had to order Starbuck.
It amuses me that Roslin was totally unprepared for Adama the flirt. She was like, "He asked me to dance... uh... Oh! I should dance! Yes!" And he was kind of amused.
They were quite cute.
Oh! And the last shot of Kara dancing with Baltar. He's looking at her tits, and she gives him the "My face is up here, dipshit." look.
Speaking of Baltar, it's interesting how much he loves the limelight. I think that's fabulous, really. He seems to be almost a new man until he continues to have a conversation with Six. So, really, she hasn't changed him, she's just made him a little crazier.
Heh.
Also. I still maintain that Lee confirming to Zarek that they had Valance was a Bad Idea.

I don't follow you. If Valance was Zarek's, why would he kill him (Zarek)?
Seriously, other people with brothers back me up here. Aren't they irritating, and prone to mocking your hygiene at times?
My brother's more prone to mocking my clothes, but it's the same sort of thing. Lee and Kara have a definite sibling vibe sometimes. Or else they're still stuck in the elementary school mindset where you show that you have a crush on someone by making fun of them and attacking them with hoses.

I tend to think Starbuck wore the dress to get back at Lee for the "no hygiene" comment. Although you have a very good point that all the women were wearing dresses, so it might have been an Order from On High. (OMG, did you see Boomer? I didn't see her until the third or fourth time through. So gorgeous! And dancing with Gaeta! He was shorter than her! And Dualla with Billy... They're so cute.)

Hmmm... well, the evidence is a little shaky that he actually was Zarek's. The closest we get to confirmation is Zarek referring to Valance as a "friend" while talking to Ellen Tigh. It's just possible that Zarek had heard the name only from Apollo, or didn't know that Valance was captured on suspicion of being an assassin.
Moreover, we still can't be sure what Valance was actually doing there. He was only guilty of possession of a weapon (and of a concealed way of transporting it). While we can be reasonably sure that he was there to kill someone, we have no way of knowing exactly who his target (or his employer) was.
It's definitely an episode that raises a heck of a lot more questions than it answers.
And Lyssie, as for the title, I don't think I've seen BSG provide titles for its individual episodes. The only instance in which they have has been the first two eps, and then only because they were shown back to back.

(er...)
It's quite probable that it was also because of his comments. *is very mentally predictable, hrm*
I need coffee.

Or wing him.
A failed assassination attempt would do fabulous things for his ratings.
But, then, I'm a little cynical.

And, ah. I thought I'd seen the titles previously. Maybe not.

As for Zarek, getting assassinated would make him look great, but I doubt he wants to be a martyr. A failed assassination attempt could help, I guess, but he doesn't really need the ratings boost at this point, and it would be dangerous to call to much attention to Valance.

I lived the Adama/Roslin flirting. Was far too cute, damn it. The dancing was way cute, too. I checked, they were both smiling throughout the whole scene.
And it's usually me mocking my brother about his hygiene. Coz I'm mean like that.

>>Anyone else wonder if Valance was actually supposed to assassinate Zarek? who else would be at every Roslin appearance but Zarek and who gets the Blame but Roslin's machine or the military or both ... and how much chaos could result?
Zarek was maybe speaking of him as a 'friend' just as Ellen uses the term?<<
Some of my Reasoning - Zarek was on a prison ship, then supposedly running it. The prisoners were earning freedom by mining and then, it seems implied, they also could earn points by running around the fleet 'fixing things' like air filtration systems. There were a lot of prisoners on that ship - a great deal of time to do nothing but listen/ talk. Not everyone by default in prison wants to overthrow the current system or would necessarily be so brain dead not to see through this guys self-serving 'collective'. They're working under his guidance - earning points, not 'money' - for freedom, for What? I could see some of them saying "he just wants us to make him look good and when he's the Prez, we're back in our hole forgotten"... it's possible bloody Valance was part of this.
There's the fact Zarek blew up a building with people in it - no one had a loved one in that building and wanted Zarek's head? Think Tim McVie and OKC ... he wanted a diff gov - people wanted his guts for garters.
However, I lean more toward Zarek being promoted by fancy folks on the Rising Star (isn't that where they found Ellen?) and so long as he serves their purpose, groovy. If making a Martyr of him would do them good, Ellen and these folks would probably have No problem doing so. Valance was their insurance/ reminder of just Who is behind him. In chaos power shifts hands and possession is 9/10ths of the law and all that stuff. Zarek is either being controlled by something held over him Or he is planning to do Exactly what he *claims* Roslin & Adama are by recreating it with Zarek & Tigh. Just all smells like yesterday's cat food that sat in the sun and is crusty on the sides of the bowl as the flies hover over it.
And I also agree, Valance was more afraid of who sent him and would come for him than he was of airlock death IMHO. Says a great deal to me about Zarek's 'friends'.
I'm inclined to believe Ellen has several marines she's familiar with - she didn't need to cajole Tigh for information about where Valance was. Sheesh, she may not even have needed to ask the marines if she is actually sober and just pretending to be intoxicated all the time. Pay attention long enough you'd figure out there's not that many places to stash someone on a ship.
I just don't wanna think Valance/ Assassination was a sticky sucker of a plot point - but I suppose it could be.... >grin

Which totally proves it. Starbuck codes as a man, Apollo codes as a woman. *feels subversive*
And the dress thing. I stick by my theory. Yes. Because I think Dualla is evil, and would be able to outfit them all... heheh. (plus, er, they were supposed to be a security force, kindasortamaybe)

Hey, it's a good theory. Dee definitely has that evil vibe happening. And I thought it was cute that Billy was getting some.
