SG-1: The Other Side

Or, why is it that Sam was so pissed and devestated that Jack let the guy bug zapper on the iris when... the entire complex was going to blow?

I mean, seriously, once she found out the group of them were basically Hitler and the Nazis, why turn on Jack and give him the "You're evil!" glare? Was it something AT came up? Or DeLuise? Because it's grating.

Or, wait. It's because Jack took all the shiny tech from her, isn't it.

Hrm.

In other news, I'm all sore from digging at the parking space and shoveling snow.

You know, I never really got that one, either. I figured she wasn't so much upset about what he *did*, but because it didn't seem to bother him the way it bothered her?

That episode was the first one I ever saw (GATEWAY DRUG).

Dude, oh my god. I haven't seen that ep since John sat me down and made me watch three million eps before I got the Priviledge to See and therein Understand Window of Opportunity. I completely forget what happens in that ep except that they all got brain damaged and there's a water/oil joke.

:wails:

I might just watch it tonight.

I LOVE seeing episodes that I loved and watched when I was not in the fandom (like serpent's lair last night) and thinking "SHITZOID. I used to love Daniel, adore Jack, think Teal'c was boring and like Sam okay, I guess"

*passes out*

Thing is, his body language was screaming that he didn't like it. He totally shuts down the second they step across, and he says to close the iris...

Eh. I don't know. Arh.

Aha! *nods* Mmm. Sam/Jack. Best gateway drug ever.

Serpent's Lair! Hrm.

"Tastes like Colonel." I so need an icon of that now. :goes hunting:

I always kind of figured that it was against her morals, and that she thought the guy deserved a second chance or something, and that Jack was just being a hardass for no reason by killing him. Besides, what happened to what Jack said to Sam in 'The First Commandment' about how you take one step closer to being like her ex when you kill someone, no matter what the reason for it was.

...they're at war. They kill Goa'uld and jaffa all the time. This man was a proven Hitler type. How does it make him different from them?

I really hope the SGC doesn't sit around and mourn and cry about all the dead goa'uld....

[identity profile] wenshar.livejournal.com 2005-02-01 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This is weird. I had a completely different understanding of that scene. I thought that Sam was supporting Jack's decision, holding his gaze and not letting go until the guy hit the iris. It was a hard decision to make even though they both knew there wasn't another solution really. For once, they seemed in agreement to me about what had to be done, a very military moment, not interfering with another race's war. YMMV

Aha. I like that interpretation much better (I fear I have been influenced by post-OS fics I've read long ago).

*pretends that's the one she always had*

And, ah, Jack kinda blows the credibility of "not interfering" when he deliberately rams his remote-control-airplane into the roof of the place... But, uh, I love him for that.

(and I really totally only watched it because Sam KICKS people near the end, and I wanted to see that again)

I always thought it was because the guy told him he'd give them all the tech knowledge of his world if they'd just save his life, and they had quite a lot of good stuff. Plus, I guess it's one thing to walk away from someone who's dying in a situation that their own evilness has caused and quite another to willingly cause the death of someone who isn't an immediate threat to your life. The guy was running after them, not actually shooting at them or anything.

It *was* kind of a moral failing on Jack's part, imho, but I liked it. It illustrated his weakness and his own code of honor so beautifully. Especially as his behavior earlier in the episode was so opposite to how he acted at the end.

He did it mostly because those people insulted Teal'c. Bad move on their part. *g*

[identity profile] karma-aster.livejournal.com 2005-02-01 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude! Never insult Teal'c! SG-1 will SO kick your ass. OT4, man! ^_^

[identity profile] karma-aster.livejournal.com 2005-02-01 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think it was the almost revengey aspect of it. Not to mention, she's seen him kill in battle before, but this was deliberately killing someone in cold blood, and she didn't quite know what to make of it. It's disturbing to see that side of him. I don't think she was particuarly sympathetic to Odo, though.

Hrm. See, to me, the fact that these people were exterminating the other side kind of meant they deserved no mercy. But I'm an expedient sorta person, so...

Heh. Yeah, I tend to side with Daniel a lot in eps. *g*

But that was kind of the beauty of this episode to me. The different ways of looking at the situation by the characters. I think it was one of those eps that really helped establish where their heads were at. I thought Sam's reaction at the end was one where she knew what he was doing, understood it, but didn't like it much. It's too bad they never really played on that. Would have made for some nice interaction. But, yeah, when do they ever do that...

[identity profile] canthlian.livejournal.com 2005-02-01 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a matter of responsibility. The entire complex was being destroyed because ... well, they brought it on themselves. They were just getting what was coming to them. Jack closing the iris though was a much more personal thing. He did that because he was pissed off. Sam knew this, and so she was condemning him.

Thank god for all the fic writers who fill in these gaps. ::nudges fic writers:: *eg*

Hrm. Yep. The Sam in my head is definitely different from canon.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2005-02-02 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I thought it was kind of dealt with in her reaction to him in Scorched Earth, but... yeah.

[identity profile] canthlian.livejournal.com 2005-02-02 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
The Sam in your head really sucks. :P

Heh! I agree! And the fic writers do it much better than the show's writers ever could. There's no doubt in my mind! :)

...What, because she isn't a pushover like the one on tv?

[identity profile] canthlian.livejournal.com 2005-02-02 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
No, because she isn't the Sam in my head.

[identity profile] livilla.livejournal.com 2005-02-02 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
No, it was coz he didn't let HER blow up the complex.

Good point.

She was probably pouty for DAYS....

[identity profile] livilla.livejournal.com 2005-02-04 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. And demanded lots of oral sex to make up for it. Jack was probably sleeping on the couch and everything.

And she technobabbled at him more than usual.

"For cryin' out loud, Carter, you blew up the O'Neill."
"So? You blew up a Russian sub AND the Endaran complex!"
"Well, probably. Besides, you blew up Hathor's power generators."
"Pfft. Jack."
"Carter."
"If you want sex ever again, you will give me lots of oral sex."
"I don't do demands, Carter."
"You sure, sir?"
"Carter."
"C'mon, Colonel, pucker up."

[identity profile] livilla.livejournal.com 2005-02-05 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
*cackles* Yep, that's about how it went in my head.

*snort* You so rock.
