The world is my oyster...

So. I've been sitting here, thinking absently. And I finally figured something out. I know why the idea last year (or the year before. Don't remember when it was) to basically wipe out the entire canon of the Subreality Cafe/Subreality on the SCMailing List bothered me so much.

And it did, I just never voiced it except in occasional snide comments to myself.

It bothers me because canon is a good thing.

This is why I cringe and moan and mock every time I hear about some new stupidity done at Marvel. (The Phoenix is not a cosmic force, for instance.... Yeah. Go away.) Because history is a good thing, and if you can't remember it, use it properly, and snuggle it...

You're an idiot.

But, wait, I hear people whine, 30 years/25 years/40 years of continuity is too HARD to remember! *whimper*

Yes, right.

So are a hundred thousand baseball stats.

You don't see the sports fans complaining, do you?

And comics/subreality/tv continuity is much more interesting, entertaining, and fun.

And I like Subreality's history. Ok, so it's been a long time since I've been involved with it, but I remember a few of the basics.

And without that memory, you get a lot of repetitious plots in Round Robins... Oh, god, do you ever...

Er. But that could simply be my own pet peeve.

In other news, despite evidence to the contrary, I am *not* writing a Farscape/Blake's 7 crossover.

Because it would end up the length of the entire Lord of the Rings. And I really don't have time for that. Really.

20/30/40 years of continuity is also a reason for comic companyies to make their Marvel Encyclopedia (big honking nardcover book), and DC's Ultimate Guide to Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman/JLA (maybe I shouldn't have typed it like that *EG*). Decades of continuity make them money. Even screwing up continuity makes money. Crisis, anyone?

*blink* I'm really in a soapboxy type of mood today. Sorry for the mini-rant.

Yes. Precisely.

Plus. .. Geekitude.

There's always the adoration/admiration from the guys in the comic shop when you actually know random facts about comics.

I made one guy's jaw drop (literally) when I knew about the Crisis. He asked me, "You know about the Crisis?" Um, duh? How far can you go in nearly any DC Comics discussion before you hear "Crisis", "pre-Crisis", or "post-Crisis".

Unfortunately I doubt if we can find a slice of lemon five hundred miles long, but the metaphor will suffice.

Yes, like writers not being allowed in the 'cafe except on a Thursday. There was a rule that made sense. It discouraged self-insertion-make-the-characters-my-puppets fic. Not that they don't have a place, but the Thursday thing was a big hint to people that they should think about what they were doing.

Problem is, if you wipe out the canon of something, then it loses what makes it special, the landmarks if you will, and becomes just a nebulous concept. It's like...setting a story in Paris and replacing the Eiffel Tower with a giant wheel of smelly cheese. But it's okay, because your story sometimes has rude people in it.

*grins* Speaking of the old Cafe.

Anyone up for a round-robin? Rowan's started a new board and I've got a rr concept that's been percolating in my brain for a while.

Is it newbie-proof? *grins*

Sorry, I like new writers, honestly I do. Mainly because I remember being one and having a really good entry to Subreality because there were some wonderful people in it who thought I was okay.

But...

some of the more recent ones can't RR. At all.

But yeah, I'll have a look for where I put that email re the new board location. Or you could email me and tell me what your idea is - I lost your addy in the Great Harddrive Crash and would like it back. ;)

You'd better not be writing one, cuz I'll kick your ass, and that's a fact.

Bad enough that I have to watch Stark and Cally unable to keep their minds off each other, dammit...
