SFF: The Old Guard

Out of cut comment: it was so so good, it was like they tapped into my id and went "here is a movie for Lyssie."

Sequel now, pls.

- ANDY'S EVERYTHING. She is so worn down, so weary, so very very tired of everyone and everything fighting each other. Charlize just nails this, and is pitch-perfect, even right down to her interactions with Nile and Not Caring about getting stabbed.

- NILE!I love her freaking out and reacting, and I love her care and caution in the scenes when she's still a soldier (even though she misses the knife), and I love that she just is like "No, this is not me." and walks away. AND THEN COMES BACK LIKE A BADASS. AHHH. And I love her having a family and friends, and how this will affect her, and Booker's conversation about family (as "my family hates me" as he is, anyway)

- Joe/Nicky. So, right off the bat, I love how their entire relationship is so completely normal. YES. Give me all of the normalization of same-sex pairings, dammit. They were just excellent, and the two actors really sold it with their body language. The spooning! The looks to each other! The way that Joe is freaking out after Nicky is shot and now worrying that he MIGHT NOT WAKE.

- Joe shutting down that soldier in the van was a thing of gorgeous, wonderful beauty - I actually watched it when it was up before the movie released, and I thought it was a little cheesy, but putting it into the entire context of everything that had come before made it perfect. AHHH. Joe going all-out to murderize that one dude even while he's not fully-functioning, is also amazing.

- Nicky. I loved his quiet taking care of everyone, and how much he loves Joe.

- Back to Nile, can I talk about how she and Dizzy and J are such a quick slice of her life, but they're all so present and given personality, and I ship it. In a friends with benefits that turns tragic way, and maybe they can see ghosts of her later in life.

- Booker. I liked him all right, though I find it a bit... self-righteous of him that he's only been immortal for, what, 200 years? He's a bit whiny about it. I guess his family hating him really stayed.

- Andy, though she has the weariness of Booker, fucking earned that. I also really want the post-patching-up scene with the cashier which dissolves into a thank you kiss and then "I'm Alive!" sex. Because Andy dealing with her own mortality, while still not sure how she feels about it, should be finding mindless comfort with willing (and hot) cashiers who are good with bandages.

- Andy/Quynh, seems all right? I feel there should have maybe been more of their life worked in, as what was there was brief and, um... torture/constant death doesn't really make me interested in it. :/ I like the idea of the pairing, but it didn't really sell me. Not enough good moments.

- I do like that Nile can feel Quynh's ~crazy. Maybe as the newbie, she's more in-tune with whatever it is that makes them immortal.

- It's so unapologetically violent. I deeply appreciate that, even though I'm not a massive fan of "violence is awesome" mind-sets. I just. I enjoyed how competent they all were at killing.

- ANDY WITH AN AX. Both her original, and then the fire-ax at the end. OMG. I fell in love all over again.

- Does anyone remember Crossfire by Brandon Flowers? It's my firm belief that was Andy now.

- Andy/Nile. My id doesn't get scratched by older woman/younger woman, mentor/mentee, but I really did like these two because it didn't feel like that (I'm sure the fandom and fic will lean into it, though). I also really really loved the airplane fight. It's hot and controlled and show-casing just how out-classed Nile is at that point.

- Copley switching sides was in-character for him, and I love his walls of research. He's hot, too, though I don't ship him with anyone right now.

- Dr. Meta Kozak. It's the lady from Asylum of the Daleks, and I liked how cold she was. She didn't view them as people at all, just test subjects (she wasn't hurting them because it got her off, but because she was fascinated by it).

- Merrick otoh, loved how it hurt him. Ugh, he was so slimy and gross.

- In conclusion: more, please.

Things I now ship:
Andy/Nile
Nile/J
Nile/Dizzy
Andy/The Cashier (who may be Celeste, IMDB picture looks to match the woman in that scene)
Andy/Quynh (probably)
Joe/Nicky (though like most m/m I'm not going to hunt it out, I'll happily read it as part of non-porny m/m slash fics)

Dr. Meta Kozak/Darla (the lady from Asylum of the Daleks) ("You had a daughter." "I know, I've read my file.") - Dr. K would find her fascinating. And it was current-era London that they kidnapped Amy and Rory from, so it is somewhat possible.

And no, I have no read the comic. I probably will at some point, but I found the movie stood very well on its own.
