SFF: Doctor Who series 11x1
I finally watched it, though I still haven't finished off season ten.
Anyway, thoughts behind the cut.
1. I... am not sure how to put this and not harsh anyone's squee, but I don't like Graham. I don't understand why we required the EveryMan Sage Older Male character. And I'm sorry, but I really don't have any intention of ever liking him. He seems to be the sort of mandated "Shit, you can't have a main cast that are all minorities, how will the white males cope?" character that is there to be The White Dude Who Is Always Right.
2. I don't understand why we couldn't have kept Grace. She seemed to be far more fun. I suppose it would have been terribly embarrassing, forcing Ryan to have his Nan on his adventures in time and space.
3. I really really like Thirteen. She is entertaining a lovely combination of Four, Ten, and a bit of Eleven. And probably some Eight. She was very Eight-like a couple of times, with the childish enthusiasm. She is also a bit Three with her science-gadgetry and making a sonic (although Three would never have managed it, he couldn't even re-construct a dematerialisation circuit, after all).
4. Grace was my next favorite - just entertaining and I loved that she was enjoying herself so much!
5. And then there's Yasmin, who was a bit Gwen except... less naive? Not sure how to put it, but Yaz was lovely and wry, and I really look forward to more of her.
6. Ryan was the last member of the cast, and seems the youngest - I know he's the same (near?) age as Yaz, but he felt at least two years younger than her. That's fine, I liked him, I just found him young.
7. Oh, and poor Carl (Karl?). Who was adorable. Although he tried to kill the monster (er, telegraphed, that).
8. The episode went a little over the top with the killing, but that's... normal, really. I mean, there are whole swatches of oldskool episodes where the only survivors are the TARDIS crew (looking at you, Logopolis, Warriors of the Deep...). It just felt a bit much (particularly the security guard).
9. If I could pick one other thing about the episode I didn't like, it was how telegraphed so many of the plot moments were. Like, I knew from the beginning that Grace would be dead by the end.
10. Speaking of the guest stars, though, Rahul, who lost his poor sister was excellent (his thousand-yard stare, guys)! The actor was in a Midsomer Murders episode where he was the killer, so it was a bit weird (I just re-watched the episode recently).
11. I AM ENTIRELY UNSURPRISED that her tech went wrong at the end, there. =D
12. Still don't like her trousers. :/ Though I do like the coat, boots, suspenders (and lbr, her in that black and white tattered costume was hot, all right).
13. Looking forward to later episodes.
On a last note, I am a little disturbed that the bits and ficlets I've written with Thirteen (and Thirteen/Yaz) have been... mostly in character. Perhaps later episodes will contradict me, though. Probably helps I wasn't being very deep in them.
