sff: The Rebel Flesh of Doctor Who

I'm not even all the way through the episode yet. eta: and now I am.

HOLY FUCK. THIS IS THE SORT OF SHIT I WANTED FUCKING GALACTICA TO DO. And they never fucking did it. The idea of what makes us real, what makes us human when we share the same DNA and memories.

<3 <3 <3 <3
-=-=

That was beautiful. I am in deep love with this entire concept of what makes us real, is it our memories? Is it that we're walking and talking?

I'm amused that apparently the pre-credits sequence was confusing? (srsly, if it was, please stop watching this show now)

I love that Neve from Red Cap was in it and in charge, despite making the wrong decision (which may have been the right one, in the end, and I love that her duplicate totally called her on it; fighting yourself won't be easy when you know all your own moves). I have this urge to write Cleaves/Jennifer fic, obviously.

The scenery is brilliant, I love the monastery and the Dusty Springfield, and the endless musty corridors.

Amy with her need to find Rory and make sure he's safe (how many times is he going to be destroyed in front of her eyes and then saved before she starts distancing herself from this thing that hurts so very much?)

I was unsurprised by the reveal at the end, and am sort of waiting to find out that all of the originals are really duplicates of themselves, anyway (kept by The Company somewhere on the mainland where real bodies don't get hurt). Because that's the sort of sick thing that makes sense.

Rory getting to care for someone and argue for them was lovely, and--also, everyone talks. Or shouts. There's no "i'm the one true way, everyone else shut up" going on.

Eleventy losing his shoes. And his TARDIS. ahahahah.

She's sulking about him running off without parking her properly. Obvsly. <3

I totally kept thinking of BSG all during the ep!

You know what this means? Bad crossover ideas where Kara and Sam get duplicates. =D (Kara thinks two Sams is a brilliant idea)

The only thing I found confusing is some of the dialog. I couldn't make it out. I wasn't sure if I wasn't supposed to, or it was an accent thing.

[identity profile] scalderwood.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Your BSG comment: I had the same thought! It's nice change of pace to have a non-boring new Who ep.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's the accents? I don't know, I had a hard time following the dialog last week. But I'm home alone, this time, and I watched on the laptop and not the tv.

Hee. I liked the last few weeks, too, but this one hits one of my kinks, so. =D

[identity profile] scalderwood.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I should've been more clear. I really liked ep 4. I fell asleep during ep 3 (pirates don't do much for me, although the captain of the pirate ship was awesome). I only liked ep 1 once I watched it back to back with ep 2 (although ep 2 rocks as a standalone ep). But I find most of New Who to be boring. I think Eccleston's season is the only season that's good all the way through. Tennant had some great eps, don't get me wrong: Girl in the Fireplace, the 1930s 2-parter, BLINK, Donna, etc.

I really liked the line "He had a human heart. A human heart!" There was another line I really liked too. But I can't remember it.

I think we're a bit opposite, to be honest. I haven't bothered to watch all of Nine's stuff, and series five was brilliant for me.

[identity profile] scalderwood.livejournal.com 2011-05-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're right about that. I liked the start and end of season 5. Although part of my problem is just an inferiority complex in that someone who is like a year older than me gets to be the Doctor. :)

Ditto, I just could not make out what the one guy said early on. Before the credits. But it didn't seem to be vital to know.

I keep seeing people complain that various Moff-era episodes are TOOOOOOO CONFUUUUUUUUUSING, and ... well, I know six and seven year olds who have less trouble with it.

Also, YES to this post.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-05-22 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
My only complaint about this episode was that it was the first half of a two-parter and now I have to wait. *pouts*

YES to your theory that the 'originals' are also copies. Wonder if Eleven 2.0 will have something to do with future!11's death...

And BBCA run ads for BSG and Blade Runner during commercial breaks - it almost felt more like commentary then The Doctor Confidential bits.

Rory trying to help G!Jennifer was very cute. And Amy trying to find him no matter the danger even more so. I like how such behaviour became their thing. Amy's the one diving into danger and figuring things out and the doer and Rory takes care of people and worries about consequences. So cute.

I suppose all the stories about emerging intelligences end like this so I also wasn't surprised by it ending in violence.

and am sort of waiting to find out that all of the originals are really duplicates of themselves, anyway
I thought about that too. Especially with Jennifer looking all uncomfortable about the deaths of Gangers and being all nervous about the getting into the harness at the beginning. I thought she was Ganger and she knew they are not just remotes. I'm starting to suspect it's going to be like Moon.

I'm pretty certain we're meant to, with the way ganger Jennifer wakes up in the vat.

Yup, total BSG vibes. Definitely played that up with the commercials too.

My tv sound was acting funny so I think there's a lot of dialogue and details I missed. Must go find.

The scenery is brilliant, I love the monastery and the Dusty Springfield, and the endless musty corridors.

YES. Love this so much.

That reminds me of a conversation I had with a coworker when I worked at a healthcare reform advocacy nonprofit a few years back.

Me: It bothers me that Ezra Klein is one of my favorite bloggers and is 3 months younger than me.
Coworker: Dude, Obama is younger than me.
Me: Touche.

Bwah. (this is not too say they haven't been complicated. But they're not... spoon-feeding the audience, either)

I knoooow. I love two-parters, though. I like having more meat to a story.

I think he might, but I think it might be too simplistic.

They're cutting those BSG ads to appeal to the DW set, too, which is hilarious.

I think Jennifer just doesn't like being in the harness. Possibly for the reason that she already doesn't think about their duplicates as just duplicates. Which made it even more confusing when there were suddenly two of her.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-05-22 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Two parters are never a bad thing...they're just better when you can watch both parts in one go :)

Probably way too simplistic but it'd be nice to see them do something with 11.2, other than have him die.
