SFF: Doctor Who. Series 6. Episode 1 'The Impossible Astronaut'

Spoilers, obvsly.

AUGH. A WHOLE WEEK WHAT.

I don't even know how to pull apart all of the bits and pieces of what I felt for this. I just don't. It was so wonderful and ridiculous and SQUEE-inducing, that people disliking it make me want to slap them.

It is timey-wimey and ridiculous, AND OF COURSE HE WAVES FROM HISTORY OMG. <3

When people ask me what I want from DW, I will now point them at this. THIS. WITH WOMEN TALKING AND DOING THINGS AND RIVER SHOOTING HIS HATS AND RORY BEING BRILLIANT. Oh, and Mark Sheppard. Not gonna lie, I would like to keep him for he is lovely.

*flails a bit* Eee. =D

Also, you know how some people are frightened of the angels, or the thingies in the Library, or "are you my mummy?" ? Well. I'm not. I understand the terror/fright/whatever, but I'm not frightened by them. BUT HOLY GOD THOSE THINGS IN THE SEWER.

THANK YOU, MOFFAT, FOR VISUALIZING THE THINGS I FREAK OUT ABOUT IN MY DREAMS, YOU BASTARD.

Ok, technically not really what I see, but. Y'know, close enough to make me hope the cat goes to bed with me tonight. THEY STEAL YOUR MEMORY OF THEM. WTF. *shudders*

White text speculation time.

I think River is the astronaut, that she knows she is and that Eleventy shows up on her doorstep one day to tell her she's going to have to kill him. Spoilers or not, she needs to know to set this whole thing into motion.

River is the one who sent out the invitations, but the Doctor (who isn't the Doctor) capitalized on them--he said he's been running his 'whole life', but that's not true.

The Doctor we know doesn't have to run, so why does this one?

Alternate timeline fuckery, possibly? Clones? Is he an experiment gone wrong while the Doctor himself is somewhere, preserved until the universe resets itself? idk. Just thoughts.

ALSO, OMG, MATCHING DIARIES, STOP BEING SO MARRIED. <3

Anyway. River/Amy/Eleventy/Rory ot4, ys? ys. BEST TEAM TARDIS EVER. With Mark Sheppard along to mock.

(ps, I love how Moffat plays with time travel and timey-wimey-ness, it's very Sevenish)

CURSE MY KEYBOARD FOR NOT HAVING THE ENOUGH KEYS FOR MY GLEE. WHICH WOULD BE ALL OF THEM. EVER.

Also, you know how some people are frightened of the angels, or the thingies in the Library, or "are you my mummy?"

I am freaked out by all of these, but not this. Hrrm. Season for me I suppose?

Damn, the memory thing is extra-creepy though.

ALSO, OMG, MATCHING DIARIES, STOP BEING SO MARRIED. <3

EEEEEEE!!

I approved of all of Team Tardis being lovely! And also Mark Sheppard!

ETA: That first white text spec is mine too. Because we know she didn't lie to Rory about what kind of day is coming, but that would be a worse day too.

The Doctor, the Legs, the Nose, and Mrs Robinson are the greatest OT4 of all OT4s. There will never be another.

I seriously cannot be coherent. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to until next week when I will maybe understand more. Because IT WAS WONDERFUL IN EVERY WAY but I have very little idea where they're going with it BUT ALSO I AM FINE WITH THIS.

"Doctor Song, you've got that face on again."
"What face."
"The 'he's hot when he's clever' face."
"This is my normal face."
"Yes it is."
"Oh, shut up."
"Not a chance."

SO. FREAKING. MARRIED.

It is timey-wimey and ridiculous, AND OF COURSE HE WAVES FROM HISTORY OMG.
THIS SHOW, THIS SHOOOOW, HOW IS IT REAL. Like, I wasn't *as* enamored with this episode because it just seemed over too fast and mostly set-up for other stuff to come, but it still made me squee in a lot of places.

Also, YES, those things were creepy as hell! Especially when the mouth went all O.

OMG, MATCHING DIARIES, STOP BEING SO MARRIED.
Shipping Eleven and River so hard, oh god. This OT4, I love them all.

They are so domestic with their matching diaries and 'I hate you/no you don't' snark. I LOVE THIS OT4!!! And I wouldn't say no to keeping Mark Sheppard around for a bit.

I agree with who you think the astronaut is but that's about all I'm willing to speculate on right now. Though I am interested in the connection between Amy & River and how they both seemed to be experiencing stomach/abdominal pains. It could hint at a biological connection between the two or it could have something to do with all their time-travel shennanigans or these creepy new aliens or it could be nothing at all...but I want to know :)

Basically, I loved this episode and everything it chose to be, haters be damned! They even gave me River-Rory bonding time to truly solidify this OT4 :D

Wait. You're watching Doctor Who now and I didn't know this why?

[identity profile] ellestra.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
The Doctor, the Legs, the Nose, and Mrs Robinson are the greatest OT4 of all OT4s.
Agreed. It almost makes me wish they had adventures together forever (even though I know I will like next TARDIS team too).

SO. FREAKING. MARRIED.
I loved the Mrs. Robinson because on one hand it plays to how they look together due to perceived age difference but on the other implies a relationship. And then there is I hate you - no you don't exchange. And he doesn't even remember the best parts. Yet :P

[identity profile] spiletta42.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
(And, um, yes, I did friend all of your friends so I could creepily stalk you in the comments on their journals, what of it?)

Because I just started about two days ago? :D (Only seen season five. Most of it, anyway.)

[identity profile] stexgirl2000.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still flailing over how awesome this was and how much I hate that this is a two part episode.

Also, River's speech to Rory about the day when she'll meet the Doctor and he'll not know who she is and it will kill her? Oy. Ooof. That was HEARTBREAKING.

Otherwise I think 11 with River, Rory and Amy are my OT4 for Who and I will happily have Mark Sheppard along for the ride as well. ("That's okay, you were my second choice for President.")

[identity profile] spiletta42.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Arg, the River-Rory conversation was just so painful, and now I hate Silence in the Library and whatever its other half was called even more now. That knocked a bit of the squee out of me.

But the one-liners were great and the plot nicely twisty. If only I could figure out why those aliens sound so bloody familiar . . .

[identity profile] spiletta42.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
*resists urge to send seasons 1 through 4, the specials, and also City of Death*

[identity profile] ellestra.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
This was so awesome.

The time travel paradoxes. Aliens that are really creepy. The wonderful team dynamic. And Mark Sheppard (and his dad too).

The episode is shorter then usual and it still gave us all this and all the main characters talked with each other. We got River and Amy and even River and Rory interaction. And I loved how River asked Amy to look after Doctor and Doctor send Rory with River. So much joy (even the aliens couldn't kill this one)

I loved it so much. And now I can't wait for the next episode.

I think it freaks me out because of the memory thing ANd the just STANDING THERE LOOKING AT YOU IN THE DARK thing. And being in corners of the room. and I freaked myself out just now when I was turning the lights off down the hall. ARGH.

YES IT WOULD. Er, be a worse day (and omg, Moff, do not do this to us, pls. PUPPIES AND KITTENS)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Mrs. Robinson actually made me laugh so much I couldn't here more of the dialog. Next week is going to cause nothing but flailing and glee. I assume. Oh god, I assume, and I haven't done that in bloody ages for Who.
ext_18106: (River Song does not need your idiocy)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
The episode was amazingly fast, yes. I think he's stuffing in everything he can for setup, but I don't mind as I love setup. But, but. Still, it felt wonderful and brilliant.

Shipping Eleven and River so hard, oh god.

I SORT OF JUST CASUALLY SHIPPED THEM, NICOLE. And now. HOLY GOD, NOW.
ext_18106: (Ellen Tigh is gleeful)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think I am so grateful and gleeful that I'm just not objective, and Mark Sheppard is giggle-inducing.

My speculation is because I want it out there, so I can see if I'm right, come the end of the season (I don't think I'm completely right, though, but it's sort of fun to speculate--and it's making the creative whatever flow, so, yay)

River-Rory bonding was something we hadn't seen and it was brilliant and I can't even get over how much it made me flail.
ext_18106: (Ellen Tigh is gleeful)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
I hate that we have to wait, but I'm in love with the length, as it gives more depth to everything. =D

River's speech is especially heart-breaking, as it does (indirectly) kill her. (I may have gotten a tear in my eye over that and said "OH RIVER")

"That's okay, you were my second choice for President." < -- this is probably why I fell in love with him.
ext_18106: (Amy Pond thinks you might be ridiculous)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
It was painful and harsh, and I MIGHT HAVE BEEN ALL "OH RIVER NO" about it. But I did also like that it was Rory and River bonding, as that didn't happen before.

They have the long finger-y things like the dude in DNA Mad Scientist.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
River-Rory bonding was something we hadn't seen and it was brilliant and I can't even get over how much it made me flail.

I KNOW!!! Their lack of interaction in series 5 was the one thing keeping me from calling them an OT4 but now, THEY ARE SO AN OT4 AND A BRILLIANT ONE, AT THAT :D

THIS SHOW JUST MAKES ME SO HAPPY AND NOTHING HURTS AND THIS HASN'T HAPPENED IN A LONG TIME!

ALL OF WHAT YOU SAID.

I just. THIS IS WHAT I WANT on my tv, and it freaks me out and thrills me at the same time that I actually got it to happen. Ok, not me, technically, BUT STILL.

I am going to be useless, all week, as I wait.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 08:06 am (UTC)(link)

YES THIS. ♥ them all so very much!!!

See, because I'm a scaredy cat, I'm afraid of the angels, the thingies in the Library, "are you my mommy" and HOLY CRAP THIS THING. This thing in the sewers is terrifying.

And I absolutely am with you re: the white text. Because yes.

BEST SHOW EVAAAAH.

I don't know that the Doctor wouldn't characterize what he has been doing his whole life as "running". First he was running from Gallifrey, then they caught him, then they let him go so he ran from them again, and then he's been running from there not being Gallifrey any more.

[identity profile] foenix.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think some of the complaints, and I am TOTALLY speculating for I have seen none yet, for this episode is that as a story in and of itself, it could be considered a bit weak. This was ALL setup and fun character stuff and dialogue. This either set up stuff for (I presume) the whole season, or just the next part where stuff really happens for this particular storyline. This literally is half of a story.

*I* am ok with that, because there's much more coming, and they are going way out of their way to make this huge and epic and awesome, and that takes time for proper setup and mystery and everything. But I think all that might, MIGHT, frustrate some people.

Nnnngh, I would really rather wait and just watch the DVDs when I get them, since I AM GETTING THEM, and they're expensive, but this premiere is making it really hard to try and stay away.

Yes, yes, OT4 all the way! Love them. :D

I didn't think the appearance of the monsters was that scary, but the whole "forget them as soon as you look away" bit is very frightening. Although was I the only one wondering why Rory didn't say "Ack, River, monsters out here!" before he looked away?

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I can sort of understand that? I think I just... view things differently/expect different things from my tv, so it doesn't bother me when there's set-up. (and I think it all made sense, to be honest, but I'm also really good at filling in the blanks)

I like my tv to make me use my brain.

Yeah, I'm pretty much going to buy the season, though, as, well, I really DO like it, so I should support it an' all.

I don't think the Doctor is dead - not even the one who was shot....remember Pandorica.

I'm hoping the Silence is Susan's revenge at her Grandfather for abandoning her.
