Katarina was a servant girl who helped Steven into the TARDIS in the middle of the fall of Troy because he was wounded. Even though the stuff the Doctor was doing was incomprehensible to her, she still did things on her own initiative, like take Steven out of the TARDIS when it looked like they were in danger.

Polly came up with a concoction that kills Cybermen. That in itself is awesome.
