Castle season two finale, a bit of Whiteout

1. We... tried to watch Whiteout. It starts with the heroine stripping off, waggling her ass at the camera and taking a shower. Not a promising start. Unfortunately, the most interesting thing in the ten minutes that we managed to watch was the opening scene with the plane crash. What a pity that it wasn't about archeologists finding it or something interesting like that. Instead, it seemed to be a mish-mash of people walking in the snow and the heroine, um, being ridiculously bland and silent. Oh, and obtrusive, ridiculous, flashbacks. To be fair, I stopped giving it my full intention when Tom Skerrit walked in on the lead and they had a conversation while she wore a clingy robe. Daria was far more interesting and had women.

2. Castle. I... felt it was horribly contrived and, well, insulting.

Apparently, Beckett can't have a romantic life unless it's with Castle? That's been the theme of the last four episodes. Oh, Castle can date and sleep around, but SHAME ON BECKETT for flaunting herself with another man in front of him.

I wasn't exactly pleased with the week that Demming and Castle were competing over her like she was some kind of prize (lost points there, Demming). And anyone claiming that's not what it was really should shut the fuck up.

But this week was like an entire fail!pie of sexist bullshit about how women must be pure and chaste for their man.

Esposito's emotional blackmail of "he hung around for you, you OWE him" is just fucking offensive. I'm sorry, but, no. Beckett is NOT Castle's boss. She hasn't asked him to do anything. Just because HE thinks hanging around her will get him into her pants doesn't mean she HAS to let him.

In what world is it OK for a man to expect something from a woman after he's forced himself into her life, ridiculed her and turned her into a sex object? (oh, right, that's not really Beckett in his books)

Let's not forget that Castle's character based on Beckett is naked on the new book cover. And it's called 'Naked Heat'. Really? That's not offensive? Really?

I even LIKE Castle, and I think it's bullshit that Beckett is supposed to change herself so that she can be with him (god, that whole idea makes me SICK). If Castle wants to date her? FUCKING SAY SO. And, no, asking her to his beach house is NOT the same thing as, "Look, I know you're in a relationship, but I feel more than friendship for you. And if you think I'm being stupid, I'll back off and RESPECT YOUR RIGHT TO LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE." (hell, in what world is it ok for a guy-friend to seduce you while you're in a relationship? Oh, right. He's in LOVE so that makes it ok. Bullshit. That's not love, that's "Someone is playing with my toy, Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah." with a side of "I want what I can't have, as soon as I get it, I don't want it anymore.")

Or, you know, when Demming first came on the scene, Castle could have been honest and said something like, "I think I like her." Demming? Would have backed off.

It's not like I was even expecting Demming to stay, but the underlying theme is so fucking insulting.

Man, my rage is still not abated much.

....and I'm late for work. oops.

The best thing about that competition episode? Was Beckett's reaction, because she basically ignored the pair of them and got on with the job. But then the finale, and her breaking up with Demming, and...yeah, that did not make me happy. Actually, no, you're right; that pissed me off, I don't need that from a show I generally like. (ETA: Also, I really really wanted to smack Esposito. DO NOT PULL THAT BULLSHIT, BUSTER. Grrrr.)

I actually loved the competition episode. I thought the men were being childishly humorous. Which entertained me. So sue me. (And I loved that Beckett had the upper hand the whole time.)

But the Finale? You nailed it 100%. It was the Double Standard written large. It was so full of emotional blackmail aimed at Beckett, and then left her stranded at the end. I absolutely hated it. So, yes, next year, this show will not be on my DVR unless/until Demming makes another guest appearance. (Also, Hawaii 5-0 is in that slot, along with the new NBC series Chase, which is about a blond haired female US Marshall who lead her team on Chases to catch bad guys. Sounds promising?)

OH THAT FINALE. grr. And just in general that Beckett is supposed to wait around chastely until Castle gets his shit together.

Though I didn't think Demming came off that bad in Overkill. He was following his leads and letting the other team work the other angle. And when his came up dry, he switched without bitching about it. It was written as a 'competition', because of the way the leads came in, but I didn't find his actual behavior all that competitive actually.

But I'm going to toddle back to my fic where Beckett and Demming still have a THING, and Castle can be cute with Alexis.

Skipping the Castle part because I'm behind...

You should give the comic book of Whiteout a chance. I knew I was skipping the movie the moment I heard that Beckinsale got cast -- not because I think she's a bad actress, but because in the authors' notes for the comic Greg Rucka talked about how important it was to him to find an artist who could draw women outside of the normal range of "comic book women"... and then they went and cast an actress whose likeness has actually been used as a reference for superhero comic characters. Yeah... kind of missing the point there.

Wow, am I fine with not watching Castle.

The comic of Whiteout was terrific, but I never held high hopes for the movie being made well.

ETA: I don't watch Castle, but when they started punishing the women on Bones for daring to have the sex lives they had perfectly happily the seasons before, that's when I quit.

I can see them together I hate when shows make their characters pussy foot around like that, Castle is so vocal of everything else what is he afraid of?? and his Ex Wife your kidding me right?? I really don't take the Naked heat and all that seriously to me its more like a spoof of those books and of course it adds a comedic sense to the series. I like the shows because the actors have such great chemistry together, better then most shows. I have higher hopes for next year~

Despite the crappy movie, I do highly suggest reading the Whiteout graphic novels, which were turned into the film. They are fabulous, and I think the silence would work much in a book than on screen.
