About the only thing this book has going for it is the femslashy team-up of Romana and Benny. Otherwise, it's a bit dull, the plot isn't nonsensical enough, and the characterization is rather off at times. (It doesn't help that I've just read Shadowmind, to be fair)

I'm pondering trying to read Goth Opera again. I seem to recall getting to the point where Nyssa was turned into Dracula's Bride and throwing it across the room in annoyance. Sigh.

Perhaps I'll just ponder Benny/Romana drunken shenanigans.

I stopped there in Goth Opera, too.

Oh I'd give Goth Opera another chance if I were you. Yeah it's over the top at points but the ending does pay off nicely.

It's been a fair few years since I read Goth Opera, but I'd advise keeping with it. Things do get better as it goes along.

I very nearly did the same, and then ended up glad I didn't. I'm fuzzy now on why (I plowed through a LOT of the novels in a very short time, and they sort of run together), but IIRC it ended up coming together a bit more coherently past that point. Nyssa doesn't get to be as awesome as she deserves, but she doesn't need to be entirely passively rescued either.
