4. I am very excited to see the wtf-inducing Atlantis finale in a not-excited at all way.

5. I had someone tell me that we don't need more female superheroes as, after all, women should be able to identify with male characters, right? The fail was strong with that one. I did not, however, call it an idiot, though it was so so tempting. Aeryn did it for me

I commented, but mostly because that dude was STUPID. I like the intelligent, detailed article that came after my comment though. It basically verbally eviscerated him. SWEET.

The fail is indeed extremely strong. In fact, it is so strong, it is generating an astronomical level of suck, which in turn is about to create an imminent black hole of Epic Fail in the Failosmos.

5. We'll get years of mileage out of that one, won't we. I especially like how, if we like actiony things, then we feel inferior to men and are trying to compensate.

Perhaps what is needed is better female superheroes?

I doubt many women identify with Power Girl, for instance, though I could be wrong. It also gets so much harder to identify with characters like Cassandra Cain when their characterisation gets screwed over so utterly.

Female characters need to be more than just windowdressing T&A waiting to be stuffed in fridges.

I think that's a good point. I think too many female superheroes either are more glamour than heroism or are put through too much misery in comparison to the male superheroes.

Re #2 - It could be so much worse. You could be up in Alaska where it's way, way below zero - like -60. Meeps!

Weather was gorgeous here today - got up to near 60. Heatwave! *laugh*

Indeed, indeed. Sadly, that is all that can be said at the moment.

5. I know I totes wish I had no vagina, because penii are better. :/

The sad thing is that some of his essay has a vague merit--male pursuits ARE given more credence for Awesome than female. And women are encouraged to be More Masculine. Just look what happens on any forum, ever, when girls are called girly.

There's an immediate out-cry of "I'm totally not! I love XYZ Violence and HATE things like Sex and the City and shopping!"

Otoh, I do actually loathe SatC.

That actually is never an argument that's used. The person I was talking to actually told me that we don't need female superheroes (or female-lead-role films), that women can just learn to identify with the males.

I don't know, Acey, sometimes, I wonder about the world.

1. Lol. I feel your pain.
5. WTF? Very much fail.

[identity profile] noybusiness.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, of course women can identify with men but that's no justification for deleting woman superheroes. That's insane troll logic. Given the fourth wall, deleting woman superheroes doesn't say "less women watch superheroes" so much as "women are less likely to be superheroes". Which makes no sense. And I think the degree to which women are less likely to watch superheroes has been exaggerated.

[identity profile] acetal.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well yeah. Besides, having a whole team of men in skintight spandex, muscles and other things bulging as they strike poses might give the impression they were gay without unrealistic portrayals of women in buttfloss to act as beards around. Not at all reminiscent of American Football.

Those superheroes need superheroines to showcase their manliness, damn it! Our children (Well, not mine, obviously) need proper rolemodels. Like Tony Stark. Or Hank Pym. Without female superheroines with barely-there costumes and inflatable breasts to focus their burgeoning sexuality / sense of identity on, they might grab the wrong end of the stick. Where are they supposed to get their ideas from if not comics? The Disney Channel? Then they might end up as damn furries!

/tongue firmly in cheek and wiggled around a bit
//not that there's anything wrong with that
///seriously, female characters need to be more than just a way to advance the characterisation or mindfucking of male characters. It's insulting to the characters, the readers and the writer.

[identity profile] noybusiness.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't honestly think I was advocating female superheroes to advance the characterisation or mindfucking of male charcters, do you? 'Cause way not. I want capable women who are main characters in their own right on the screen.

[identity profile] acetal.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
No, of course not.

Also, can I get a hell yeah?
