Audio BSG. The Woman King, Captains' Hand, and belated Downloaded and earlier thoughts.
Spec for 4.5 is probably contained herein, as is various spoilers for all three seasons (and Razor). That said? Even I don't have the stomach for The Woman King in audio format. I lasted all of 15 minutes the second time (four, the first time). And it's really sad, because WK has some decent scenes. And NONE of those scenes have a damned thing to do with the plot of the episode. (well, ok, a few of the "HELO TAKE YOUR SHIRT OFF AGAIN" ones do)
Ok. Having cracked my notebook, I am way behind on noting my thoughts on listening to BSG (Eye of Rapture gets a daily listen, though. Mm. Double the otp, double your angst-meter)
This is actually just a random thought that wasn't really indicative of anything, but: do the BSG writers have shipper camps? Is that why, sometimes, we get more overt Kara/Lee (or less, or it's not even shippy, whatever), and other times, we get more Mom/Dad? Is there, like, one lone Athena/Helo shipper who battles daily to get them moments? Episodes (in no order); Eye of Jupiter, Rapture, Taking a Break From All Your Worries..., Collaborators, Lay Down Your Burdens, Resistance, The Farm, Flight of the Phoenix, Scar, Sacrifice, Downloaded, The Captain's Hand, Razor
1. You know, every time they do the "Kara and Lee miss each other"/"Are best friends forever and ever and ever" I never believe it. It always feels forced. (obviously, I was suffering the previouslies on Eye of Jupiter) [Do I really have to disclaimer this as pointing out that I've never seen the OTP-ness of Kara/Lee, and thus a lot of their interaction feels forced and pasted on?]
2. *snicker* As always, Kara is so totally using Lee. Hey, Lee, she really did mean it when she said "there is no us" *snigger* (not to mention, as always, Kara, your marriage is failing because you'd rather frak around with other people that work on it)
3. Basestar piano music. Sigh. Pretteh. (and Temple of Five music is pretteh, too)
4. Sam. God, man. That husky, angry voice = hot. Also, Lee, it would have gone a lot better if you weren't frakking around with his wife and driving a further wedge into their marriage (Sam may have given back the tag, but neither seem to be able to avoid each other). Sam can kill Leoben, if only in his dreams. He can't kill Lee.
And Kara is so sure Sam will do as Lee wants, that he'll lead the civilians. Maybe because Sam's the better man or Kara knows the way he puts people first. Also, she sounds so wistful when she tells Lee Sam will do it. Like she regrets the rift between them, if only right at that moment.
5. Oh, Chief. Your wee story about dancing naked is one of the reasons Cally married you. *cackles*
6. Boomer vs. Athena. I wonder if she thanks Boomer for telling her about Hera, later on? I mean, even with the whole threatening to snap the kid's neck, if Boomer hadn't been on at her about it, she and Helo would never have gotten her back.
7. Holy frak. Sam vs. Lee smackdown. STILL AWESOME. ilu, Sammy. (also, the mental image of wee!Lee Adama vs tall!Sam Anders is still giggle-inducing)
8. It's Cavil that started Caprica on her move from Cylon to human. Three and Gaius slammed it home, and Athena gave her a reason to leave.
9. What if Gaius was supposed to go through the Siege Perilous of the mandala?
10. Did Sam think Kara was dead before she appeared? Because there's no indication that any of the rescued knew that Dee and Kara's raptor had come in.
11. Tigh is the one who suggests the 13th colony saw another nove and drew a picture. o.O
12. I still find it hard to believe that Gaius would kill himself--he simply has too much ego not to make them kill him, instead. It's the Ronald Hinks thing--Baltar doesn't think of himself as guilty, really, so why should he kill himself in supplication?
13. Dee didn't lose Lee to Kara. She lost him to his own problems---though, Kara going back to Sam certainly contributed.
14. Baltar really snapped between Cylon and Colonial interrogation. And the drugs they used on him--what did they do to his brain?
15. Mom shouting is frakkin' funny.
16. Damn. Sam really did walk away (TAB), thinking that was the end. He was expecting Kara to never call him again, given that she'd been so uncertain about what she felt for Lee (and Leoben, both, come to that).
17. Baltar pretty much admits his culpability and complicity with Caprica Six in the destruction of the colonies during TAB. So why is it such a shock when he admits it again during The Hub for Roslin? Seriously, he pretty much says, "I got frakked over and gave them a backdoor into our defenses".... But maybe his admission under duress wasn't something they could use against him and Mom just... sorta forgot?
18. What did Gaeta do that Gaius knows about? He knows something extra, something that's dangerous (or shameful) about Gaeta's time on New Caprica. Did Sparky have a hand in Kara's captivity (I say no, on that one, given Sparky's own comments on it coupled with the fact it's not big enough for the rage Gaius caused, there)? Did he traffic in humans?
19. If Chief didn't love Cally, why was he so panicked about her dying in Precipice? (srsly, panicky like a mofo--and not just from Tigh's threat)
20. God. Mom and Dad really reamed Zarek to get her back in charge. Although, I suppose it was a good compromise, it was still as hinky as fuck.
21. Sam arguing for Gaeta, why? Is it just part of the cumulative effect of his anger at himself? He is struggling with something, getting over New Caprica, and Kara, PTSD? Or did Sam know something about Sparky that no one else didDid Sparky procure him looks through Kara's keyhole?
22. Cavil, Doral and Sharon against Baltar? Or Simon? I bet Leoben sees Baltar has a part in the plan and Caprica's undecided and D would like to molest him...
23. Thousands were left on New Caprica, and that's never mentioned again after Collabs. Pity. Didn't someone write fic about the Cylons capturing them all and conducting experiments?
24. Sam was going to leave Kara--even before she told him her world had changed. For him, the war was over. If he cut her out of his life, his failure to rescue her wouldn't be visible. And maybe he could move on.
25. Who told Sam where Kara was?
26. The LDYB previouslies include Kara pleading with a dying Roslin--how does Roslin know about Sam? Did she guess, or did Kara tell everyone straight out "I wanna go back for my piece of ass, please."? Because I always got the impression Kara was trying hard NOT to make Sam part of the issue, that it was a "we owe it to all of the survivors to go back and fetch these people" thing.
27. I think Cavil plans to nuke Earth. So. Did he get there after Kara did?
28. The five lights of the Apocalypse, rising, struggling towards the light... their sins only revealed to those who enter the temple... only to the chosen one. the chosen one x 4 or so. Time stops. -- So. The FF really did cause the destruction of the Earth. Or something at the beginning of time (they're also the five pillars dedicated to the five devotees of the one who cannot be named), and keep coming back trying to fix things--but the question is, did anyone see their sin, or is it something yet to be revealed? D'Anna saw who they are, but I don't think that's the same thing (on top of which, what IF Gaius had stepped onto thepalantir Eye of Jupiter and seen the Opera House? would he have snapped and died or is the human body resilient enough that he'd've survived, but gone insane?) (further sidebar: did Sam ever enter the temple, or is Chief the only member of the Dylons that did so?)
29. Man. Gaius in TAB makes me giggle like a wee child.
30. Supposition: Gaius wasn't just torturing Chief to get a rise from Sharon for the information. He wanted to know just how far love goes, even with a Cylon.
31. How did the Tigh and Dee conversation go about rigging the election? Because Dee is damned organized, so she would have already had a plan... It must have been strange to work with Tigh rather than against him (as she did in Resistance).
32. Hello, the Farm. Ok, so, Adama's return to command music is so very Star Trek, particularly Voyager-y.
33. Kara/Sam in audio form is hot. Like, possibly hottest of all (though there's a later audio bit that, just, guh)
34. Surprisingly, Simon's voice is sexy. I could listen to that man read the phonebook. Mm.
35. Kara's abusive childhood is still as annoying and stupid as fuck.
36. Simon does regret what they're doing--or at least, to Kara. Something about her got under his skin (maybe that's Kara's true purpose: to turn Cylons from their path with her Awesome). At least. One Simon does. The jury's pretty convinced the rest are happy as clams.
37. In Scar, who got Lee to go keep Kat and Kara from killing each other? I bet it was Hotdog, that frakkin' snitch.
38. Damn. Sam really is Kara's reason for living.
39. Racetrack's jibe about Sharon was what decided Kara into a fight. In some way, maybe she does still sorta like Sharon...
40. Gods, Jammer is an idiot. JAMMER. THIS IS THE REAL REASON YOUR ASS GOT AIR-LOCKED. You're STUPID. And doubt that Chief can build a plane. Mm. Blackbird. So so so so pretteh.
41. Kara and Lee are as cute as PUPPIES. And Hotdog, too, I guess.
42. Dee vs Lee on the mat = HAHAHAH (also, in rewatching, there's way more sexual tension in that two seconds than Lee and Kara have the entire episode. THEY ARE STILL AS CUTE AS PUPPIES, THOUGH. Also, OH, BILLY)
43. I still don't understand why Sharon thought the Cylons would consider her a liability. Was it something they programed her to think, or, did she think they would come and take her and steal her baby from her? The latter is far more likely. I think she lied to everyone when she claimed that the baby was a mistake. The others might consider Sharon a problem, but the baby was their ultimate goal (as Dad points out in Downloaded).
44. Having mainlined more than a few episodes, I still wasn't really prepared for Sacrifice, but I did it anyway. I think Dee really loves Lee. I think she started seeing him as more than just a pretty face way back in Resistance, and I think that continued on (there's a spot during the end of Resistance, when Tigh stands down the order to shoot Lee's raptor down. I don't think Dee's sigh of relief was only for the Prez). I also think that she loves Billy, and she's conflicted--with Lee, there's a very physical as well as mental attraction. With Billy, it's like a puppy and it's easy, and I think... I think Dee buys that love isn't supposed to be easy, and so she turns him down. She's still testing the waters, so to speak.
45. Sacia's reasoning is so annoying. Most of her words are annoying. This episode was a good idea until they actually wrote it (Woman King is ten thousand times worse, however).
46. Kara shooting Lee was dumb. And stupid. Also--how did Kara believe the people in the bar wouldn't recognize her?
47. I have a sentence here that reads "Dee really does love him." and I think I was refering to Lee.
48. G4 explosives. hahahahah.
49. Man. Another note about the Kara/Lee romance feeling totally forced and pasted on. I wonder if this has to do with vocal intonations that you don't pick up when watching?
50. Galen's nightmares about being a Cylon started when Hera 'died'. Granted, they could have started earlier, but there's no real indication of such a thing. And it makes retcon sense that the death of the first human/cylon hybrid child would trigger something subconscious in a member of the FF (and Tigh probably isn't sensitive enough/ignored it and Tory knew she wasn't dead).
51. Note: less than ten jumps to get back to Caprica (and sidenote: Kobol must not have been that far, because Boomer was able to get 'received' on Caprica so she could download into a new body. Dad must have really pushed to get them far far away from Kara's booty call)
52. Lee only wants Kara when she's unavailable. The same goes for Dee: Billy was an obstacle he wanted to overcome.
53. OMG. Gina and Kendra are so CUTE. like KITTENS AND PUPPIES. (er, yes, hello, Razor)
54. I maybe sorta ship Kendra/Lee. In that, Kendra would try him out just because boys are new way.
55. MAN. Cain's speeches are worse than Dad's. I didn't think that was possible.
56. "You seem so surprised." NO DUH, Gina. She didn't ask about your sleeping arrangements! And she doesn't seem to really want to know.
57. Both hybrids talk of sin, the sins of humanity, the sins of the Cylon. 'Kara Thrace will lead them to their end, she is the harbinger of death'. Yeah, yeah, so my girlfriend is an angel that will lead them all to the promised land on her wings of doom?
58. In case this was unclear: I still hate Cain. I mean, I can understand why you can like her, but I just can't. She's not even entertainingly batshit insane. She's just run-of-the-mill evil and sadistic.
59. Dad needs a punch in the mouth. I don't know how he's rationalizing it, but there is no fucking way in hell Dad would EVER have shot families. EVER. And you can never convince me that Dad would have killed Tigh in cold blood for refusing to execute an order that would waste lives. So, Dad? YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO BE LIKE CAIN, and YOU ARE FUCKING WRONG. She deserves all the scorn that can be heaped on her. Forever.
60. I kinda want to write an AU where Gina is able to kill Cain, right there in CIC the first time...
61. Woman King. Oh, the pain. So, why wasn't medical screening mandatory for refugees? Like, literally, no one allowed on board Galactica where they could infect MILITARY PERSONNEL with their germs unless they'd had all their shots?
62. Zarek predicted that Baltar's trial would cause riots and murder and chaos in the fleet, and he was apparently terrified of this fact.... and yet, none of that actually happened. Gee.
63. Back to Flight of the Phoenix. So, this Cylon logic bomb thing, was intelligent, adaptive... Could it see into the future? Did it try on purpose to kill Destiny Thrace?
64. Also, Baltar and the Cylon say the SAME EXACT THING when explaining the logic bomb. Why did they even bother with both sets of lines? They were pointless, you could have, y'know, given us more of Kara and Chief and the Blackbird, or maybe Kara talking about her latest plan to rescue the kids on Caprica...
65. Dee and Lee are adorable (and sexy) in their scene in Captains Hand. Plus, that little purr at the end that you probably don't notice while watching? Oh, dear god. hot. It's, like, this self-satisfied little purry noise from both of them, and... it possibly eclipses Kara and Sam kissing in the sexy sounds department.
66. Cottle's hint about Asylum (for Rya) is funny as hell, especially because DAD'S GLARE IS AUDIBLE. omg. So fucking funny.
67. "She's not Billy." Awwwwww. DAD MISSES BILLY.
68. Dad says the Cylons went to a great deal of trouble to create baby!Hera. And I say, yeah! They so totally did, y'know, Helo and his penis are so VERY hard to control...
eta: 69. Also, WK? Why is it always the unwashed masses that don't believe in medicine? Why isn't it rich people? Or atheists?

12. I still find it hard to believe that Gaius would kill himself
*nods* I totally agree with this.
19. If Chief didn't love Cally, why was he so panicked about her dying in Precipice?
Sometimes the show gives me whiplash over Cally/Galen. They're madly in love! No, it was just convenient to get married because no one else was available. Augh.
23. Thousands were left on New Caprica, and that's never mentioned again after Collabs. Pity. Didn't someone write fic about the Cylons capturing them all and conducting experiments?
I think we're supposed to believe that most of them died during their time their before the exodus--either from weather/bad conditions or from cylons... *shrugs* I don't remember seeing any fic about it, but it is interesting--even if it's dozens rather than thousands, it's still an area ripe for exploration.
34. Surprisingly, Simon's voice is sexy. I could listen to that man read the phonebook. Mm.
Yeahhhhhh. Smooth.
52. Lee only wants Kara when she's unavailable.
It does seem to be a Lee trait.
56. "You seem so surprised." NO DUH, Gina. She didn't ask about your sleeping arrangements! And she doesn't seem to really want to know.
Yeah, that little speech was awkward.
62. Zarek predicted that Baltar's trial would cause riots and murder and chaos in the fleet, and he was apparently terrified of this fact.... and yet, none of that actually happened. Gee.
Back when he said it, I was totally hoping he was doing some sort of mind game on Laura. But then he was dropped again for a while so apparently it was his real belief?
68. Dad says the Cylons went to a great deal of trouble to create baby!Hera. And I say, yeah! They so totally did, y'know, Helo and his penis are so VERY hard to control...
But it was guided by true looooooove

Heh. That totally cracked me up. Hotdog is so a snitch.
Kara and Lee are as cute as puppies. And Hotdog too.
Wha? Did I read that write? ::Faints::
Dad so needs a punch in the mouth.
Yeah and he still does. I haven't like Adama in such a long time. He just got old and hard and mean (more so than ever before) and I can't understand the writers' motivations for his actions anymore.
how did Kara believe the people in the bar wouldn't recognize her?
I don't think she thought they wouldn't recognize her, but that being military (most of the people who would know her) they wouldn't blow her cover. Of course, she probably didn't figure on Ellen Tigh.
no subject
Wha? Did I read that--
*snickers* Yes. And they really are, in Flight of the Phoenix. They're all giggly from lack of oxygen and falling over and cuddling. Like puppies. Puppies that like groping each other.
I'm ok with Adama if I divorce him from everyone but Roslin. But when I try to put him in context, I find him annoying. Especially when he apologizes for Cain massacring civilians.
*giggles* Kara just doesn't know that she's a rock star.

That's notes from, like, a week, of constant misuse of technology and giggling inappropriately.
Sometimes the show gives me whiplash over Cally/Galen.
Sigh. I suspect they just couldn't decide and so kept going back and forth. Which is annoying (perhaps there's one shipper on the staff?)

Huh. Good point. I just find it difficult to believe they didn't leave people behind there, given how fast the evacuation went. Even if you've drilled, there's still going to be some people who are a little too slow, or stop to grab that last book they want, or-- (which is another thing. All the damned resources they left behind on NC. What a waste!)
As for the Zarek thing, Roslin (or maybe Tory) actually says something like, "He sounded utterly terrified" and... nada. Sigh. See, WK should totally have been about Zarek instead. Or the next two could have had more Zarek. (I do find it interesting that Zarek is now on Roslin's side. I wonder if he believes in Earth or if he's decided she's the winning side?)

10). I think that he probably didn't know she was alive, but they were probably still waiting on news before giving up hope.
18). I'm curious to know that, too, but doubt that we'll ever find out.
25). I kind of always assumed that they knew about the detention center and wanted to break humans out of it, but he didn't know that Kara was there, specifically.
35). I was so annoyed by Kara's abusive childhood. I didn't mind it when it was implied, but when it became canon and we got actual stories and actual visiting the dead mother who abused her for very good reasons, gah!
36). I actually wonder if the Cylons have this level of interaction with the human women on the farm at all? Maybe they interact with Kara because of her super special destiny. It seems like too much work to pull this level of mindfuck on all the women when they can just hook them up to machines. So, really, maybe this is just a result of interacting with any experimental subject at all?
46). Yeah, that totally made me like Kara less. That whole plan was stupid, and just, yeah.

No kidding. All those tents, the building materials, the food, the clothing, and on and on.

I would totally love an intriguing Zarek episode in place of TWK. As for what Zarek believes, I'm always willing to attribute expediency instead of faith when it comes to him. Heh.

I've said it before and I'll probably say it again: The boggest problem with The Woman King, at least with the main story, is that no one but Helo and Tigh are in character, and for no reason but that that's the easy road to the plot they wanted to do.

Even though it's very un-Starbuck, I love giggly Kara. (Although I kind of love every flavor of Kara.) As long as they don't start sniffing butts, we're good.
I'm ok with Adama if I divorce him from everyone but Roslin. But when I try to put him in context, I find him annoying. Especially when he apologizes for Cain massacring civilians.
I've just been really disappointed with his arc since New Caprica. He no longer seems like the stern, but wise leader to me. He just seems bitter and broken.
*giggles* Kara just doesn't know that she's a rock star.
So true. Keep waiting for someone (dualbunny?) to do a Kara vid to Pink's So What.

I like Adama, though (which probably sounds wishy washy) up until Sine qua Non and then... Seriously? He's annoying and stupid in that.
Hahahah. Someone should do some Courtney Love/Hole vids for Kara. Because, really, Pink isn't near crazy enough, and Courtney has that whole "look at me I'm so abuuuused" thing that Kara's got goin' on.

I would have loved an episode about how Athena really isn't as integrated as she seems, and how Zarek is still being Zarek, with maybe a little side of "the fleet is unhappy with the way things are" that wasn't over the top and like getting hit with a sledgehammer... Some lead-up to Dirty Hands would've been nice, too. (while I'm asking for a pony, I would have demanded another Kara/Sam talking scene).

10. I sort of would have liked to've seen her dead, just to see if Sam really would kill Lee.
25. Well, yeah. It's pretty obvious that no one was talking about Kara's whereabouts (I think he may have tried to ask Sharon, at one point, and gotten nowhere). And while they could think she was there, they couldn't get in to get her out. That assault would have been suicide.
35. Part of my annoyance is that "abused female child" is the cornerstone of SF/F literature, and is pretty much damned common-place in female characters. So Kara Thrace? NOT NEW. And I liked the idea that she was new and that she was basically a normal kid who was a wild crazy pilot and kinda an asshole.
36. Actually, that's a good point. Most of them probably don't come in with gunshots (Sharon mentions gas in LDYB, I bet that's what they normally used). But the curiosity about Leoben's Special Kara Thrace was probably also a factor.
46. I didn't mind the plan, it's just that, Kara, honey, YOU WERE ON TV a few months ago. I bet there are people who have bad scan/printouts from that, of every single pilot, and there's probably even a Starbuck fanclub out there, somewhere.

11. Woah! ;]
12. Yeah, I never bought that he would, either. Narcissism and fear of death are his defining traits! Though I guess he was preparing to die in Rapture, but that was supposed to be a Chosen One sort of death.
13. Kara going back to Sam contributed to Dee losing Lee?
16. Yeah.*sniff*
17. Wow - I need to watch that again, then. I'm totally cool with having more reasons to resent Jane Espenson.
19. He only didn't love her in episodes written by Jacob fangirls and self-admitted TWoP devotees. See above. ;)
20. They were both like 'frak this not stealing elections crap.' Which.. I guess is understandable given the timeframe.
24. Yeah, I think that's as good an explanation as any. I'm weirdly happy about Sam being an ass here. Only because he's too damn perfect otherwise.
25. F5 Spidey sense = my all purpose fanwank. Though maybe they found a seating chart.
28. Oh wow. I hadn't remembered that dialogue. Man. Poor Dylans!
maybe that's Kara's true purpose: to turn Cylons from their path with her Awesome).
I approve of this theory.
38. <3
39. I still say she was also defending Helo's maiden honor.
Kara and Lee are as cute as PUPPIES
This is totally the tagline I'm using to link your post in Gnews.
46. Yeah, that coming right after Scar felt a little bit like what we were talking about with Garabaldi in season five - though not to such a heinous degree. And I wish we knew more about how pilots are regarded by the Fleet - I'd think they'd be like rockstars. I mean these people face death every other day, and the pilots are the ones stopping it directly, so yeah, I'd think the top pilot would be pretty well-known.
58. I hate her too. And no, he wouldn't have - he couldn't even kill Tigh when he found out he was a Cylon traitor!

11. Man. I need to edit it to nova. But it's true! And is one more stone in the wall of FF-ness.
12. I would say that he was also all over the board, emotionally. And to return and be treated the way he was might send anyone over the edge (especially since he thought he was a member of the FF). But it still didn't feel exactly right.
13. (I'm trying to remember what I was thinking of, at the time) Well, Dee thinks she lost him to Kara (or would lose him to her). I think my logic there was that, really, Dee didn't lose him to Kara, she lost him to his own sense of duty and honor--but Kara did help prod those back to the fore. With her appeal to "let's just cheat" and his whiplash reaction of "how do I know this is real?" later on. Lee is not a man cut out to cheat on anyone, and Kara reminded him of that fact. Which meant that when something else thorny in a duty/honor/integrity way came along, he was sensitive to it.
And technically, yes, Dee left him because of his stance on Baltar.
17. I need to actually watch it, too. Because listening to it, it seems obvious that he pretty much admits everything. But it's possible that he just thinks he does. Or something.
19. *giggles*
20. Yeah, I think it was a good move, but it does sort of prove that Dad regrets telling her she'd die a little if she stole the election...
24. I love the man, but he is a selfish bastard at times. But so's Kara, so what's good for the goose and all...
28. I've been listening to Eye of Rapture a lot, so the hybrid's dialog is something I've picked out twice. I know there was spec on it way back when, before we even knew who they were. But it does lend to the cyclical nature of time and the 'all this has happened before' thing (I wonder if the next cycle will talk of the sins of the seven?)
39. *giggles madly*
This is totally the tagline I'm using to link your post in Gnews.
*snickers a lot*
46. Yes, this. It was also... it was like, they couldn't think of a good way to have them even more at odds in Captain's Hand, so that's what they chose. I'm sure it was also meant as some Real World Allegory. Sigh. Argh. And Sacrifice has good points, but the bad starts to out-weigh it, after a while.
58. Cain would have been all "...ok. Torture that sumbitch." Dad just broke. A lot.
and really painfully in the bad, why did they shoot this, ew, wayno subject
Nice wish list! My own includes wishing that they'd shown us more stuff leading up to 'Maelstrom'--maybe other nightmares or something...
And a pony too! Yes!
