BSG: Racetrack in tanks, and Skulls looming over her. *makes grabby hands* (she's so wee and tiny!)

I actually don't have much to say about Who. It was cute and light. Fluffy. Unimpressed with Rose showing up at the end, though. *eyeroll*

Ok. I'm sure, somewhere, there are people gleeful about a pointless episode about religious freedoms, but. No. Not interesting, sorry.

You know what, though? It's ok. Because we got Chief's incredibly shitty rant about Cally. As if the past week hasn't been bad enough for female characters, BSG cuts the legs out from under another one.

MOST FEMINIST SHOW ON TV MY SHINY WHITE ASS, YOU MOTHERFUCKERS.

My opinion of Jane Espenson's writing skills just dropped deep into the toilet. I'd appreciate her not destroying more women, please.

Actually, the two most interesting bits of the episode:

1. ALMOST KILLING RACETRACK IS NOT ON, YOU MOTHERFUCKERS.

2. Sam watching Kara sleep is slightly wacky, but sweet. Sam, honey, wake her up and put her to bed. Preferably with you draped around her.

3. One more. I noticed an attempt to put more PoC in the backgrounds and scenes. It's even more glaring when you watch the Skiffy movie of the week commercial, which is more white than white paint on freshly-fallen snow in the middle of the arctic.

Next week might cause ranting. We'll see.

eta: OH YES. AND WOMEN DO NOT COME WITH HEALING VAGINAS, YOU GUYS. Caprica Six? Also on my list of things I'm pissed about. Her motivations are all about boys now, ISN'T THAT AWESOME????

I love how they hinted at allowing the women to interact more and then, y'know, STOP THAT IDEA RIGHT QUICK.

ps. Tigh is obviously taking care of Hera and Nicky both, now.

At this point, let's airlock all the female characters because at least that would keep them from being massacred on this show.

Gah. Watching this ep made me feel dirty.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
That... Well, that would possibly work. Sigh.

I want to not hate this show, and... I would like my wacky crack back, please. :/

[identity profile] pataka02.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
All of a sudden I had this image of all of us with our hands out, holding cups that say "Good strong female characterization, please" rather than the usual "Alms for the Poor."

Heh.

We could make an altar.

[identity profile] pataka02.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
My mind feels all icky. I immediately lept from altar to "Baltar" and now I need a shower.

AHAHAHAHAH. I said it aloud as Baltar, m'self.

[identity profile] frolicndetour.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Why did they do it Lyssie? WHiiiieeeeee!

I've always hated the fact that all of the "feminist" rage for Galen hitting Cally and then marrying her fell squarely on her shoulders. Because she forced him to marry her with her evil feminine wiles.

God, I hate Espenson for taking a crappy Jacob recap and putting it on my tv.

[identity profile] ide-cyan.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)

I just watched the ep, and, OUCH, that is SO APT. (And Edward James Olmos directed it.)

[identity profile] ide-cyan.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
And this episode turned the Caprica Six who *isn't* in Gaius's head into a frelling S&M fantasy for Saul Tigh. Urgh.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, argh. I was too busy being capslocky about Cally's destruction to touch on Caprica, which--dammit.

I was so pleased they were going to do something with her, but, no, instead, she's gonna heal a man of his problems. On top of that, all of her motivation is now apparently about learning from pain and Baltar.

[identity profile] ide-cyan.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It takes a pretty special show to have a senior officer aboard a military ship go into a prisoner's cell to then have her assault and come onto him.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually try hard to forget that Chief beat her up. But when I remember, I'm pissed at HIM for even thinking he had the right to be forgiven.

Argh. It makes everything so damned skeevy. :/

And Cally did not force him, dammit! All those bits and pieces through season three show them as being a fairly stable, happy couple. And the UB flashbacks are most definitely happy. *kicks things*
ext_18106: (aeryn sun)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll admit her beating him was... unexpected. If only that was all she'd done.

Sigh. You know, the last active thing Caprica did was kill Boomer. How sad is that?

[identity profile] ide-cyan.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't watch the show regularly last season. I think I could do well to do the same again this season, except I still kind of want to know what will happen to Kara.

[identity profile] frolicndetour.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I know Espenson is new to the writing staff this year, and she's said she's a huge fan of Jacob's recaps, so I have a horrible feeling that might be what happened.

[identity profile] frolicndetour.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I like the recaps, but I think they were much much better in season two, before he started channeling the Hybrid.

Tory does seem very much like a Six knockoff, which is a little disappointing. :/

i was very weirded out by the "boiled cabbage" smell thing... it made me think of the racist language re: the irish in america, and really didn't seem necessary. it also struck me as the most out of character thing.

Yeah, weren't Cally and Chief both supposed to be lower-class? Though I thought on Galactica everyone ate the same algae, so it was very out of place, and just fits all the "dirty" "trashy" adjectives fandom liked to throw at her. *sigh*

[identity profile] stargazercmc.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
My take on the whole thing with Tyrol ranting about Cally was that this was him seeking punishment. He couldn't handle the fact that someone he loved took her own life rather than be with him-as-Cylon, and in a huge dollop of self-hate, he ranted about it being her fault for the sheer purpose of provoking a reaction from Papadama. I saw his rant as being more about bringing about punishment for what he is/what he did - based on his earlier attempt to try and get people to call him out on his mistake on the deck. Adama approaches him about what a good person Cally was, and he takes the opportunity to get Adama to bust him down by bashing the person he loves most because he needs to be punished and no one's biting so far.

Does it make Cally any less dead? No, and that sucks. But my read was kinda the opposite of what you're saying here.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Given how often the fandom has said the sorts of crap Chief said, I'm not buying that.

Also?

PUNCHING Adama would have been way better at getting himself punished. But, y'know, there wasn't enough misogyny in this episode, so they had to add some more.

Actually, punching Adama, starting a fight, actually fucking taking responsibility and quitting would have been far faster at getting him removed.

Instead, he'd rather blame a woman.

How fucking progressive.

Perhaps because I'm new to fandom, I thought the whole point of Chief's rant was to show how completely frakked up he is right now. We aren't supposed to sympathize with his Cally hate. Are there people who actually are?

Oh, I'm totally not cool with killing Cally. Sorry if that didn't come through. But my point is, the way I read it, Tyrol isn't acting progressively because he's not progressive -- he's an asshole. Which I can't imagine any viewer not recognizing. Maybe I'm being pollyannaish, but I'm having a hard time picturing someone nodding along with him and going, "Yeah, Cally was a smelly tramp and he never should have settled for her."

...I recommend never ever reading the SciFi BSG message board. People are, in fact, applauding her death, her manner of death, and his rant. There are even a few saying her death wasn't painful enough.

Ah. So by finally getting caught up on the show and dipping a toe into fandom, I have found a place more insane and misogynistic than SPN and HP?

Re: Here via the newsletter

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. We're not quite that bad. It's... some of it is a lot less overt and subtle, and there's a TON of love for the women of BSG that quite out-strips a lot of shows.

But we're a tiny fandom compared to SPN or HP, and the vocal minority of stupid is sometimes deafening.

But, still, if I could kill people with my brain? Smaller fandom.

I keep joking about if they murder Sam that I'll quit (or finish off Kara's characterization). But, I realized, while it was a possibility that 'Track was dead that I would have quit. Right then. I would have made people tell me what's happening, but I would have stopped watching.

Seriously. That's the real reason he's missing Ellen: she would have been a distraction from diapers and formula.

Heh. And, dude, don't get me wrong. I love and adore Rose, as long as I avoid Fandom's version of her (either the useless girl or lovelorn girl), and pretend that she wasn't in Twu Wuv Fowevah with the Doctor. The same goes for Martha, though.

I'm distracted by the idea of Mel and Rose teaming up to save the universe, however.
