*blinks at Skiffy*

I.

...

Ok. So, I was poking at the Skiffy board earlier, and there were people complaining about Skiffy's shows today "b-movies" and the like were being aired, apparently. They were ranting about why they weren't showing BSG beforehand.

I have to sort of agree, since a marathon would've been smart...

But they're showing Stephen King's The Stand, which is... Actually, I don't know. I kind of don't care about it. But it's not that bad, is it?

And now? They're showing Pirates of the Carribbean (hey, Kkglinka, for the record, your fic slots so veryvery neatly into the beginning, there). Which.

Pirates aren't exactly SF.

Further, now I really do want a BSG/Pirates crossover. (c'mon, Kara and Sam with leather pants and swords? You know that would be hot)

Hola, Captain Jack!

eta: had a thought, thanks to remembering Karolina's fic: did Jack know who he was rescuing when he dove into the water? *contemplates*

heh, there you go, poking around at Skiffy again...

The Stand mini was pretty good, as I dimly recall, assuming that's what they're showing (and not some knock-off "Most Dangerous Night of Television" version)

PotC is a fantasy, I'd say, since magic clearly exists in the 'verse. So it makes as much sense as showing Labyrinth or something like that. More than wrestling anyway, though I guess that's a fantasy of a different kind...

And yes, BSG/PotC xover would be cool. I started one but then ran out of steam beyond the "hey, isn't it cool to have post-Maelstrom!Kara on the FD to meet the Captains Turner?")

The Stand is a decent screen adaptation of a novel I like very much. If you want to get on Sci-Fi for showing what's not science fiction, though, I'd think it were better to complain about the weekly wrestling than something that at least has fantasy elements.

It's the mini. Corin Nemec was in it!

Well, yeah. Mostly, I'm just having this cranky thought about Pirates awesome women versus BSG's s3 gutted women.

Mostly, I was confused, I was expecting b-movies.

*pets* now, now, let's not get carried away. There are only 3 women in PotC that do anything. And that's including Anamaria. As much as I love Elizabeth, S.3 Roslin would eat her for lunch.

Tsk. You have to match characters appropriately. As Liz is the hot young buck, she needs to match off against Kara or Apollo. They're both just getting started at that halfway between noob and experienced vet thing. I'd actually go with Apollo because of that whole promoted beyond his current capability issue.

Anyway, the real question is: could Ros take on the Commander of the entire Chinese Red Fleet, Mistress Cheng? That's another story entirely. (And it involves Chinese prostitutes, pillow books, magical dragons and a whole lotta rice wine).

Unfortunately, season three Roslin has about as much dimension as a sheet of paper. Liz could throw some water at her and be done with it.

OMG they can use her as a sail! When it comes to female characters, you gotta cherry pick the good scenes where they aren't portrayed as useless plot devices designed to provide challenges for more important male characters to overcome. Which you know. And reveals a disgusting and unprofitable level of sexism permeating the entertainment industry. I shouldn't need to do an elaborate mental cut'n'paste to female characters to find ones I can admire and relate to. Whoops, sorry. All I know is that I stopped watching BSG halfway through season 2 because the stupid and sexist tropes got too hard to ignore.

But, dude, don't you know it was Important to Kara's Development that she spend four months locked up with a Cylon instead of being a resistance leader? And Cally is obviously best-used as a whiny twelve-year-old childbride.

sigh. Season three could have been so much better.

At least it's not wrestling.

Also, leatherpants!Kara/Captain Jack is now all I can think about. Damn you!

I like The Stand better as a book, but the first few minutes of the miniseries, with the camera panning across all the dead people sitting at their desks while "Don't Fear the Reaper" plays is AWESOME.

Me = occasional Stephen King geeky fangirl.

But everyone knows that female viewers can't relate to female characters unless they exhibit stereotypically gendered behavior and actions! It's why women don't like any male characters! Gender is an intractable brick wall determining all relations!!! It's not like characters work better when they're developed as people, first. Pfft.

Characters on BSG aren't people, they're easily exchanged barbie dolls for when Ron wants to Make a Point.

They always have been. Just. Sometimes, I forget, and expect them to react like people instead of ciphers and paperdolls.

Wrestling does get better ratings, though. And the people who watch it might've stayed for the lesbian sex.

heh. No worries. I only caught part, and I'm... not much of a reader, with King. I tend to get bored (I am totally a product of the Pop generation, man)

Heh. You just watch it for the fic source material, don't you? (Rather the way I keep up with Catwoman).

Pretty much. That, and to see how much is mockable. (usually, most of it). If Kara and Sam would just die already, I could completely ignore it.
