Well, yeah. So? Alice is awesome! (Note: I don't think you actually disagree? But I'm not sure where this is coming from. And so, I state that I like Alice.)
Oh, but don't you know any woman who goes out and acts assertively rather than passively waiting for the hunky male lead with the incredibly broad shoulders to rescue them HAS to be a Mary Sue? It's, like, a law or something.
She's quite lovely--and very bouncy and geeky about things. I was reading an article about the new RE movie, and she was babbling on about stuff and had to stop herself giving away plot stuff. I just--she's so enthusiastic and seems to really like the part. Which makes me gleeful.
Exactly! She's the kind of person who you'd want to be friends with. I was reading this article she did recently (maybe it was the same one that you read), and she was just so adorable in it. Like she was talking about some new weapon that she has in the new film, and how awesome it is, and how everyone should own one to do everyday things like bone a chicken, slice pies, and kill zombies. And I loved her more after I read that. Really, she's geeky but awesome.
Nah. She has pretty much the same double-standard check against "mary sue" and its relative incompatibility with being the lead character as I do. I've always held the definition that a Sue (of either gender) must steal the spotlight from the lead by virtue of their magnificent, wonderfulness. The lead character might be over the top, or stereotypical as cardboard, but they're usually supposed to be awesome.

Oh good. I thought you were calling Alice and John "Mary Sue" like it was a bad thing.

I don't get people who hate Alice. She's a great character.
