quickly...

things I've learned from fandom
1. If you don't see the racism in DW, you're a Rosefan AND an OTPer.
2. If you're white and don't see it, your opinion doesn't count. 'cause you're white, see?
3. If you're white and do see it, you're lauded as a saint who is All-knowing.

things I've learned from Seasame Streed Sesame Street (obviously, NOT spelling at too early in the morning)
1. sharing
2. counting
3. compound words, spelling
4. my imaginary friend is awesome
5. sex, age, race, physical ability, class and any other exterior quality doesn't matter. It's what's inside that counts.
6. Snuffy pwns all.

things I've learned from 30 minutes of some Harry Potter movie.
1. Hermione hits people.
2. Harry is pointless, useless, and spends most of his life whining.
3. In actuality, Hermione is the lead character, Harry's just a prop to keep the woman-hating masses from going apeshit (not that it works).
4. If HP had been written with a girl lead character, no one would have cared, and it would have joined the thousands of similar books on the shelves as "just another chick book".

Apart from the Sesame Street one which I didn't really get because...erm...my childhood exposure to Sesame Street was minimal and short-lived at best, your lists depressed the heck out of me.

[identity profile] bittertwist.livejournal.com 2007-07-19 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Your last list is amusing because, as much as Hermione contributes to the smarts in the books (ie. figuring things out), she's the one character who annoys the HECK out of me. After book 4 and movie 5, I wouldn't mind if she just fucked off instead of teared up all the time.

*headdesks at Doctor Who list*

I hate that Fandom, I really do. And yet, I love the show. So odd.

But word on the Sesame Street list. Jim Henson, for the win.

Racism in DW is mightily hiden if it's truly there, which is a lot of my problem with the racewank. I see that race issues could be read into it, and how subsequently denying that it could be read that way -- or that it couldn't at all -- is silly. But it's more like these should be persuasive essays, not the end-all, catch-all of the subject.

I really didn't agree with much of [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj's original post, which is why I never got around to commenting on it, but the responses it got were interesting. Though all the people trying to tell me that white men can't see it as well as black women sorta grated on me, especially white women.

(I had a whole big two or three paragraphs, but they were too long! But to all those white people who are saying that because I'm white, I'll never truly understand: I do have empathy; your white failings are not necessarily mine, and why are you so obsessed with compensating for your color? I bet you could name all your black friends to me off the top of your head.)

ON TO SESAME STREET! Sorry if I hurt your feelings there. I was just a little bit insulted about the way it was thrown out there like ... an insult. & I never even watched the damn thing! I never had any problem with Sesame Street, it was my Bummy.

She also wouldn't let me watch Power Rangers, Batman cartoons, Lois & Clark, Big Bad Beetle Borgs, or cable television. I wonder what she would have done if South Park had been available to me.

I can't comment on HP movie V, 'cause dude, yeah.

Clearly, Sesame Street > Fandom.

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2007-07-19 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Nahahahaha! Agreed on all counts, baby.

Now, you have been chosen. Come take a bow. (http://kali921.livejournal.com/146273.html)

Word McWord McWordstoffersen. Why can't fandom be more like Sesame Street? Wouldn't that be awesome? Cookies would abound.

Oh, no. They have to be veggies now. *eyeroll* Sadly, good ol' Sesame Street ain't what it used to be.

Sorry. I nearly got into a rant on the current state of children's television, there.

ack! No, you didn't insult me. But I was pressed for time and went, "I can post and prod DW fandom and mock HP or I can reply in-depth and be late to work" thus, I posted. And I am going to erply, I'm just decompressing from work first.

Rant away. Then I'll rant about the Golden Age of animation compared to the dreck that we get nowadays.

Which is sad, considering people like Mercedes Lackey and MZB and Anne McCaffrey have been publishing drek stuff for years (oh, wait..).

MUPPETS.

...and you've just proved my point. Because, personally? Harry needs to die so no one has to listen to him whine and moan about his shitty life.

MUPPETS FOR THE WIN.

And the porn, in some cases.

What's really really funny, is your first paragraph was what I just said in reply to you (except mine was badly worded). And now I'm going to go buy comics and pretend the world is flat, or something. Sigh.

I will after comics omg.

[identity profile] bittertwist.livejournal.com 2007-07-19 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually don't mind him so much. He's got reason to angst and be teenager-y. It gets a little out of hand in some chapters of the later books, but it's still definitely warranted.

Hermione is just annoying, there's no context except "oh, I love Ron, but he's being a twat about liking me too, boo hoo..." I hate girls like that too, if it makes it any clearer. LOL.

On the Muppet Show yes....but not really anywhere else.

Except Farscape. And Labyrinth.

But that's IT!
