Memorial Day Skiffy: Torchwood
Wow. Awesome
Just watched the episodes I hadn't seen (marathonned, really), and, dude. Awesome, awesome show. I'm loving this deeply. In numbers, because I'm not sure how coherent this will be....
1. Fandom has been telling me, since the beginning, that I will hate Gwen. Having now seen every episode of the season, I do not hate Gwen. Not only that, I'm not really sure what the fuck is wrong with fandom. I adore Gwen, I think she's made some damned stupid mistakes, but she's also learned from them, and she's human. Plus, her freaking over Rhys's death was heart-breaking (especially as I think she realized it was her fault).
2. Owen is still trying desperately to be Tony from NCIS, but he's got a crass sort of charm. I can see why Gwen figured him for the kind of fuck that would relieve her angst.
3. Suzy (ie? whatever.). Everyone is dead keen on her, and I'm not sure why. She's fucking annoying. Not quite as annoying as Ari from NCIS, but close enough I was wishing Ziva would show up to put me out of my misery.
4. I went into the show with very low expectations, since fandom keeps telling me it is bad. I'm going to stop listening to you fuckers.
5. Jack? When your team doesn't know there's a demon under the rift, you might want to tell them so they don't open the rift. Dumbass.
6. Ianto shot Owen.
7. Owen shot Jack.
8. Jack kissed Jack. Mwahahahahahah.
9. Countrycide. Shit, that was a fucked up episode. *shudders*
10. Which brings me to what my roommate said after we'd got done. I don't think there's a single episode they could've skipped. They were all, if not essential to the whole, at least damned entertaining.
11. Torchwood, series two: The Search For Jack's Mojo...
12. The music in TW is really spectacularly awesome as well.
13. Lots of people kissing. I like people kissing and porning on my tv. And it was all preeetty...
14. My roommate is pondering a TW/Authority crossover. People need to go convince her that would be a fabulous idea.

I liked Gwen better than Suzie. Owen/Gwen is just fantastic and all of the shooting? LOVED IT!
Countrycide was so creepy. SO CREEPY. But I loved it.

It's not really a matter of prefering Gwen to Suzie (despite Suzie's claim that it is), though. Even if Gwen had never been around, or Tosh or Owen or Ianto had not been there and Suzie had, instead, I would have found Suzie annoying. She's an obnoxious, whiny, self-absorbed brat.

I misspoke - it's not that I like Gwen better than Suzie - I just didn't like Suzie at all and I really like Gwen. Like you I found Suzie very annoying.

Won't pretend that I loved every episode, but I thought as a whole the series holds up very well. There are some truly fantastic episodes (and a couple of not-so-fantastic). "Countrycide" was brilliant (in a scare the hell out of you sort of way). I really enjoyed "Small Worlds" -- both for the Jack history and the storyline. "Out of Time" was heartwrenching -- not the Owen bit, as much as the tale of the three time travelers. I think I'm in a minority, but I also rather liked "Random Shoes" -- though I do think it would have run better if they'd aired it earlier in the season. I rather enjoyed "They Keep Killing Suzie." Not really a Suzie fan, per say, but I thought she served as a brilliant foil for character exposition in that episode.
Honestly, I think the series was weakest in the begining and the end. First couple of episodes were kinda rough, and "Day One" really was a bit too much "fan-boy wet dream," though they were effective in introducing the characters. The two part finale... again, I sit in the minority. They could have been so good, but damn if I didn't want to edit the hell out of them. Bilis was a villian with such wonderful potential, but I think they wasted him. And the monster... the CGI boys should be ashamed. Could have handled a bit more Jack/Jack, too. :)
Best part of Torshwood, in my opinion, is the characterization. Love the character development (well, except poor Tosh -- but that takes me back to my finale rewrite, 'cause they totally missed an oportunity to play with Tosh). I would have liked a bit more Jack backstory... but then wouldn't we all. *g* I totally agree, Gwen broke my heart when Rhys died; I cried.
Can't wait to see what they do next series. We've got the cast of characters set, and there are so many different ways they can go with this. I want to know more about Owen and the Weevels. I'd like to see how Gwen deals with Rhys in the aftermath of the death (hell, I just wanna see more Rhys). I'd love to see more Ianto and Tosh next series. And I can't wait to see what happens with Jack.

Fandom is never satisfied with female characters. It's just a problem we have to live with, sadly (and given that so much of mouthy, online fandom is women, it's really sad). Boys can do whatever they want/be however they want and fandom will love them. Girls? Christ, look out, they'll have ten thousand and one objections.
The shoes episode, that was the "Gwen does an entire investigation on her own with a ghost" one, right? Right. I thought I was going to hate it, and while it was a bit slow, I did like it.
And, actually, that episode, and the one with the time-stranded people were two that I think made me like TW a little bit more. The writers aren't afraid of doing different things. With concepts and ideas and stories that aren't just monster of the week or crisis of the week things.
I honestly think the season, as a whole, is breath-takingly awesome. Marathonned, it's got a nice, scary and linear quality to it.

I really don't get the criticism. Sad thing is, they complain because she's human and makes mistakes -- but if she was perfect, they'd complain about that, too. It's a shame that fandom seems to perpetuate the double standard, particularly considering the large number of women in fandom. Unfortunately, I've found professionally, it's often women who are the most critical of other women. Perhaps we're so used to being held to an unequal standards, we have become guilty of perpetuating those standards. (Damn... there's a paper in this somewhere -- must turn off the grad school brain. I've got enough on my plate as it is.)
Yeah, "Random Shoes" is the ghost one. Got alot of flack when it was released, but I found it really entertaining. I got a kick out of Eugene as the Torchwood groupie. Thought is was a fun ep. (Then I also really enjoyed "Love & Monsters" and fandom hated that one, too. Not enough Doctor, ,I suppose. But I thought Elton was great, and I really enjoyed the different perspective.)
I agree, it's the concept/idea stories that I've enjoyed most.
Marathonned, huh... maybe I['ll have to give it another run through. One of the things I wasn't entirely satisfied with was the order of eps, seemed disjointed, but I haven't really looked at the series as a single entity... just might have to give it another run through. Plus, need to introduce the hubby to the joys of TW. :)

Oh, good. I liked RS, it was very slow-moving, but it had a story to tell, and it was interesting to watch Gwen on her own--I think that was also the episode where I went, "Gwen's grown up more."
Sometimes, you see different things when it's marathonned, and you're going from episode to episode... Babylon 5 worked that way, for me. *rubs hands in glee*
