ok then.

MJ statuette artist Adam Hughes weighs in.

As far as I can tell, he's saying "Feminists love me! MJ is a bimbo anyway! We would never change 'em anyway, 'cause censorship is bad, mm'kay? It was just a misunderstanding, you silly girls!"

Wow. Hey. Good to know that the comic companies and artists are paying attention to the womenfolk.

Honestly? It wouldn't piss me off so much if there was a similar domestic/exploitative (domex?) statue of Spidey. Can't you just see him webbing up those holes in her jeans?

What an asshat. He made a couple of comments in there making apologies for racism, too.

When will stupid people just learn to STFU?

Oh, I love the opening line of the article: "It was something that came from nowhere, really."

Dumbfuck. It didn't come from NOWHERE. It came from being fed up at YEARS OF PERVASIVE SEXISM within the industry.

I'm going to have boiling blood from rage when I'm done with reading this, aren't I?

[identity profile] ninamonkey.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, the male-dominated responses in "Newsarama" are even worse. Thank God for sites like "Girls Read Comics."

They just don't get it, do they?

[identity profile] vickyocean.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically Adam Hughes thinks just because a woman is a model, actress, or dancer, she's automatically a bimbo. Umm, Yeah...

[identity profile] bittertwist.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I was going to comment on. He's one "classy" talker.

The whole paragraph about using the n-word (I still don't see how the hell it even relates, since he went on to openly say what he wanted anyway). "...Worse thing since the Holocaust." "...getting their Irish up..."

[identity profile] ladielazarus.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I like how he never addresses the clothes that she's wearing. Like, for example, the THONG hanging two miles out of her pants.

Aren't classic pin-ups usually done with more... class? I thought they were.

God, he's a jackass.

[identity profile] ladielazarus.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and what the f does 'Get their Irish up' mean anyway? That just kinda seems unnecessarily racist, and doesnt help the opinion of a man who is being called a feminist to show he's an all around jackass.

[identity profile] wiliqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude. If he had stopped at "Um, this is the scenario I had in mind," and had made ANY kind of acknowledgment that the finished piece didn't communicate said scenario at ALL (although I kinda think his illo did)? He'd be fine.

As it is...Hey, Adam, how do those toes taste? *eyeroll*

[identity profile] thekatebeyond.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
How many times did he say "She's always been portrayed that way"? That is just no excuse to do anything. What if Abraham Lincoln had said, "Blacks have always been property in the U.S." and just left it at that? That's such moronic rationalization.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That got me, too. I was too tired to try to parse it, though. ALSO, it was extraneous, as was his "feminists come up to me..." Yeah. Don't think they'll be coming up to him to tell him that anymore.

(I mean, seriously, what does a colleague of his saying something that seems racist have to do with the objectification of women? wtf.)

[identity profile] anastasiab.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I made the mistake of following the link to the article on his White Queen statute. 2 comments on that-

1. She looks like she has a pecker.

2. He at least admits he "slutted her up". No such admission for his lovely comments about the MJ statue.

I consider myself an easy going feminist, but this really chapped my toast.

Oh, I agree. If there were just parity--men as well as women being treated like domestic slaves--I'd probably ignore the whole thing. But that will never happen, because they don't see anything wrong with things as they are.

I think a large part is that people weren't expecting this sort of backlash. So I can kind of forgive the interviewer the, ah, persiflage.

You, ah, might. I know I did, and I was barely awake enough to understand vocabulary.

But, no, they don't.

That's ok, one of the commenters did, iirc. I'm still disturbed that he sounded like a good third of the commenters on DevilDoll's post.

Well, I can't speak for the original art, but I have heard that the statuette is... not as well-done. But yes, they used to have a modicum of taste.

I missed the getting their Irish up line, I think. Or if I did notice it, it was background noise. Sigh.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* If he'd just said, "I don't know why this is offensive, but I'm sorry if it offended people..."

Or even something to that effect.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Twice, I think. I skipped some of it, in order to try and figure out what he was talking about. The "but it's always been that way!" defense is highly obnoxious.

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahah. See, I didn't even think about the Emma Frost thing. And. Wow. That's kind of sad (you don't have to slut Emma up, dammit).

But admitting the MJ statue was sexualized more than it should have been would have been admitting he was wrong, I expect. And men hate admitting that.
ext_18106: (Default)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* And, also, from what I recall, a lot of people on DevilDoll's post said the original concept art wasn't all that bad, but the statuette was overly sexualized.

I suppose he's trying to protect his job, and not criticize.

[identity profile] tavella.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The 2-D version has less of the "presenting like a baboon" (as someone memorably called it) aspect, which is key.

That's one of the things that always annoys me about interviews with Katee S. People harp on her weight. Which is, like, wtf. The woman is gorgeous and obvsiouly works out, and they're still saying she's not thin enough?

Bah.
ext_18106: (Kara Plays well... by timjr)

[identity profile] lyssie.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. There've been a couple interviews where the interviewers (male) have said, "So, hey, you've lost weight, huh?" YES. Because her weight has SO MUCH to do with her ability to portray her character.

I mean, I'm ok with people who want to go on about their aerobics or whatever. But talking about how much they needed to lose and shit? Rar.

And, yes, she lost weight between seasons. Final Cut, I think, was the leanest she was in s2. And s3 has been about the same. I think she's gained weight, since then--in her recent convention appearances, she seems happy and in good shape.

...and now I will stop obsessing over her weight (sheesh).

Just a quick comment before I leave the country. WTF is this! All these artists draw ans sculpt women as bendy toys. I know what it is they is all single. wtfits- translation What the fuck is this shit. Can't fault the work and arty stuff but come on. I 'm not going into deep descussion as I'm sure others are more articulate that this MJ washing Spidey's suit. FUCK THAT BITCH!

Well, Tricia did lose weight to play Gina. And for the record, if my roommate were six inches taller, with the same body type she has, she'd look like a brunette Tricia.

That said, yes, there is a double standard. It may never go away, because the women of the world, for the most part, don't actually care.

I fully endorse this site. Get it started. I have lots to say about men...

Y'know, what takes it beyond cheesecake and over the top is what she's actually doing. If she were sitting at her desk reading a book with her thong and her tits both hanging out, I don't think anyone would care that much, it'd just be cheesecake. It's that she was doin' her man's laundry and smiling about it. It's a glorification not only of sex, but of servility; in fact, even more of servility that sex, because it's very, very easy to cast sexual availability in women as servility more than sexuality, and the context makes that hard to ignore.
